Paddled out around 6:30am this morning for a 4 mile circuit. It was very foggy. About 2 miles out, you cant see the land. I wandered around semi-lost until I found good ol' buoy R8. It was about where it normally is. Buoys in the sound tend to wander during storms. Luckily I had a compass on my rescue whistle as well as using my sports watch tracking. For those interested, we had 1.38" of rain yesterday, according to the NWS gauge we monitor out back. Our electronic weather station only showed 1.03", but it is over 30 feet in the air and the wind was blowing almost sideways, so probably kept blowing rain away from falling into the rain catch. #capehatteras #obx #hatterasisland #outerbanks #theouterbanks #weather

Wind out of the SW around 9mph. Much warmer than it has been. Surf almost flat and very low tide. This was my first time rucking since I took time off last week because I was sick for the first time in over a decade. The Florida Ham Radio Repeater System is going to be streaming for as long as the internet and their repeater system is running during hurricane Milton. The good thing is that we can listen in without effecting the system (i.e. we dont want to interfere with any emergency communications, but we can listen to the communication traffic). I have been listening to it for the last few minutes. Not much going on, but a few stations are checking in, in preparation for the storm.

For those interested in Ham Radio, I would recommend getting your license since you can't legally transmit without a license. There are multiple hams on the island and testing can be arranged if enough are interested. I recently bought a new inexpensive ham radio to see how it does against my more expensive radios. I was pleasantly surprised. I have other radios of the same brand (Baofeng) from years ago. They worked but were very basic. Baofeng has really upped their game. For $28, you get a decent radio that does anything a beginner would need (connect to repeaters) The good about this is that it has a big color screen, 2 channels so you can monitor 2 frequencies at the same time, easy to program, easily hit the local repeaters, good battery life, powerful enough for most uses, charges either with a cradle or by USB. The main bad thing is that the screen is hard to read in bright sunlight. But at $28, I can live with it. There is also an option to buy the radio with an extra battery for $40, and an option to buy a 3-pack for $80. If you are interested in ham radio (especially since we are in a storm prone area), let me know. If you are local and you get one of these, I can help you with programming it. But again, if you want to transmit legally, you need a ham radio license. lots of projects today. working on my ruggedized ham radio go box. Just painted the stencil of my call sign. Got the Yaesu 991A mounted and the power supply in. Have the Anderson power pole distribution block in. About to mount a USB power distribution block as well. Probably will install a raspberry pi, a t-beam LoRa device. I haven't been paddling in a while because I have been surfing most days and it shows. I can feel how much out of shape I am compared to when I am paddling or rucking in the winter. I have to get prone paddling into my schedule more. Every time I am out on this board, I have a fulfilling, but very strenuous time. The extra exertion and the peacefulness of nature on the Pamlico Sound allowed for contemplation on the significance of today's date in history.

Having a total house surge suppressor installed. We only had a 10 minute outage of power durring the installation, but time enough for me to play with my new project. a solar-based battery bank and inverter. Our network and computers are all on UPS. So all I had to do is plug the UPS into the inverter of the battery bank and ZAP.
