The mosque in my town is named for Omar ibn Said. Today I learned that he was an Arabic scholar from West Africa who was captured and enslaved at the age pf 37. He ended up here, where he wrote several books, including an autobiography. He is buried in a neighboring county. He died in 1864.

These small open air cafes, called sodas in Costa Rica, are everywhere. They serve all three meals, lunch & dinner consisting of rice, a protein and a salad plus a few sweet plantains.
