I just bought an audio book on audible and realized I had to do it on my Mac because apple prevents payment for content from iPads and iOS, even in web browsers… And it got me thinking, why does apple let me have more freedom to control my environment and make my own choices on Mac but not the iPad?
To be clear, they would remove Audible or any other app from their AppStore if they allowed paying for content using the web on their devices… In effect they’re banning buying any content on their devices without their cut.
But why are they allowing people to use their Mac for that stuff? What makes a Mac different? I know there’s the history of a Mac being a full computer where you control root, but if it weren’t for historic reasons, why would Apple give more permissions on their computers vs iPads which feel the same in terms of most UI, have the same processors, etc…
And yes, I know, it’s a problem of control, but most people use iOS devices in developed countries… so we can’t just ignore Apple’s platforms.
As we struggle with spam and other trust, safety, and moderation issues in Nostr folks might find looking at what’s happening in Bluesky to be interesting. Lots of similar problems, different solutions.

Banning kids from social media or worse giving parents control will lead to queer teens committing suicide. This doesn’t protect kids, it hurts them.

How is it Emily in Paris wears a new outfit every scene and she’s almost never shown shopping, nor it it explained how she affords the clothes nor where she stores it all in her tiny walk up apartment?
Anybody else getting tons do spam replies with fake accounts and invalid nip-05’s? I’m thinking if relays refused to accept content from npub’s that were impersonating other people’s nip05 it would help.

Want to be paid to bring your community on to Nostr? UC Boulder is accepting applications for their Open Social Incubator.
This is money and support to #grownostr. This is for people who are non-technical who want to work on onboarding and cultivating a community. Who are your people and how do we get them on Nostr?
“Participants will meet as a full group monthly and receive ongoing, 1:1 project-specific technical support as they seed and grow new communities using open social media tools of their choosing. Participation is fully remote and all sessions will be conducted in English. All participants should commit to making strides toward community-building in open social media by the end of the program. Completion of the full program, from November 2024 to April 2025, will be compensated with a stipend of $3,500 USD.”
The program is open to any open social protocol including but not limited to Nostr.
