For those who don't know, it's a relatively new and evolving genre of fiction (that could turn into reality) that offers a vision of the future centered around sustainable energy, ecological balance, community, and social justice. It presents an optimistic view where humanity has successfully overcome challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequality through technology and collective action. It's like Cyberpunk, but the opposite (which, if you ask me, Cyberpunk is dystopian).
Solarpunk has some key points that include:
- Renewable energy
- Green technology
- Ecological restoration
- Community and cooperation
- Art & Aesthetics (Building a visually and beautiful environment)
- Hopeful outlook (trust and hope in the future)
What I like about this is that it serves as a counterbalance to the pessimistic visions of the future. And I think this is what we need. It's as if a lot of us already assumed that the future will be Cyberpunk: individualistic, unfair, with a lot of contamination in the food, in the skies, where social relations will slowly disappear... a dark place.
Every time I show this 'Solarpunk' genre to my friends or family, they love it. I'm sure you probably do also. All of them say, 'that's so beautiful but... it's a utopia. It's not achievable'. Why? Who made us believe that a different possibility isn't possible? Sure, if we think 'there's nothing we can do about it', then, nothing will be done about it.
For the moment, I find it very important that people start questioning these things. No, the future not necessarily has to be bad. If you are an architect, urban planner, engineer, scientist, ecologist, activist, designer, artist, educator, researcher, entrepreneur, or innovator, etc., have this genre in mind in the decisions you make. Don't lie to yourself. We can indeed change the future, step by step."
