With the Olympic squad in Marseilles prepping for the big show, the young guns are looking to get the jump on 2028. Low time preference is key.

If you’re new to cruising, Dinner Key Marina in Miami is a great spot to keep your boat and start your adventure. Mooring balls are cheap, Biscayne Bay offers protected water to learn, and there are a wide range of day-sailing or overnight adventures to practice your skills before aiming East to the more technical Bahamas. When you’re learning, it’s easy to feel like you have to get all of the projects done before heading out to open water, so if this is you, my next few notes will feature a few easy adventures to get you out of the harbor and onto your learning curve in bite sized chunks! Here, we hopped over to our favorite anchorage - No Name Anchorage - and The Cleat bar for the afternoon! I’ll expand on that trip in the next note, but in under an hour you can be hooks-down in a beautiful spot with calm water, activities galore and fun neighbors… All while learning about tides, anchoring, channel navigation and forecasting wind directions. I coached sailing at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but the cruising life is new to me! Szn 1 was all about survival: all of our systems broke and had to be repaired, I gave myself shingles from too much #coffee and stress! Rode out several nights in 50knots of wind in exposed anchorages and mooring fields. Szn 2 is just beginning, but I’m learning quickly and thinking about creating some content on how to accelerate your cruising life learning curve.
