Chickens free ranging in olive groves lay great eggs, fertilise the soil, restore biodiversity and keep the cash flow. going when olives are on alternate fruiting
Anyone come across a bootable drive reformatting itself on a start up? I've tried two different usb drives, erased partitioned, formatted as Msdos-fat, guid, converted an iso of Linux to dmg, renamed the partition and drive and burnt the dmg to disk with DD in terminal. Unmounted and ejected. Remounted and looked at Disk Utility to double check the drive was still as I expected. Then start up with alt key and the drive isn't recognised. Check in disk utility and it is no longer msdos fat, and the disk name has changed to the dmg file name. Wt......!!! How was your day. More predictable, I hope. #linux #mac #asknostr
The rain is absolutely torrential. Thunder cracking directly overhead, hold on to your hats. It is most welcome. Most of the picture-perfect olive groves that Spain is known for, receive EU grants (€350/ hectare to plough) After this storm passes, they will be inaccessible, flooded, and the top soil a bit more eroded. Man, not the sun, is the principal driver of localised changes to ecosystems. When the rain hits my land it is stored. When thevsun hits my land, the ground cover absorbs and slowly releases heat. The bare soil next door hits 60c in summer. The hydrological cycle is disrupted. It is very difficult to do the maths to prove to the genersl population what that means for the climate. But it is easy to see what it means for our ecosystems. Millions of bad decisions since we discovered agriculture, accelerating over the last hundred years, exponential the last 40-50 years, result in the current big ag complex. Join up the millions of plots of land being farmed in an unnaturall way, multiply out the local broken hydrological cycles, you dont need a person on social media to join the dots for you. And you really should question why there are still significant voices playing down our direct role in ecosystem collapse. You just don't hear the naked truth that we have been shitting on our own doorstep for too long and the consequences are playing out before our eyes. "They" can't tell you what to think, but they sure can tell you what to think about. They talk about climate change, global warming and similar terms - such a trigger, and such a vast concept to get our head round. We either get super freaked out/ depressed, or mostly switch off, overwhelmed. That strategy is playing right into our chimp brain. It's clever. The day a govt and corp talk and act in terms of dealing with global ecosystem collapse, global because they join the dots of local ecosystem collapse, then they have my vote, but it won't happen because they work on an exploitationall economic model. Is there any other sort? No, but there are ways that's more sustainable than others. (The only thing Man literally creates is art. Every other moment, we just exploit what we inherited from creation ) Anyway, until society wakes up and runs itself along eco-friendly lines, and refuses to support big ag production as is, I'm afraid we are on a one way track to famine at one end, and slow degeneration through malnutrition ( obesity being that signal,) at the other. Why? Because I am not the only one who can no longer rely on the seasons. I might be able to adapt, to "control" my veg garden, snd I can have groundcover and shade trees and chickens to mitigste agsinst weird rain, wind and sun, but I sure have no way to controlv the vast majority of the land around me. Consumers could force hands quicker than me ranting or govt policy. Like @bitcoin bull said about changing the financial system peacefully, bankrupt the fuckers. Equally speedy change could be off the back of the masses refusing to buy shit food. They say you cannot afford good food I say, if it's nutrient rich, you don't need a lot of food. Really, its a lie that big ag and huge scale farming is the only way to secure a huge food supply for better fed, healthier populations. Production from small market gardens is insane. And now I am rambling. Cheers #km0 #growstr #local #ecological #Spain #olives #circular-economy
social media has always sucked up the energy and wisdom and meaningful content of its users But maybe Nostr can achieve what legacy options never could - search like Google. Websites, curation services pulling together to make the nostr gems endure, discoverable.
Been a very unproductive day between relays, and bootable Linux drives not playing fair. No doubt it is me and not having the latest greatest kit and 2 left thumbs. On the positive side of this learning opportunity, the takeaway is: I'm only interested in tools that make me productive. I'm willing to learn, but that's not the same as being a crash test dummy. There's more of me than techies who love to tinker, or if there aren't, Nostr is going nowhere. Or the same place as Linux which is still not in the average Joe's lexicon. I used to run a big how to website so I'm not just having a pop after a bad day on Nostr. Very often we fell short of providing the clearest info, because of too many assumptions. Instructions need to be idiot proof. The word "just" needs to be struck from technical step by steps. For newbies, explanations need to come AFTER we have followed every step and achieved something technically challenging. Under promise and over deliver. .I think the client owners need to step up and have a pinned welcome message with resources to get newbies started. It isn't right to be attracted by censorship resistance, sovereignty over content etc, when it is still a dark art to achieve that. Back to the crash test dummy, learning curve, tinker balance. But Even Twitter had a button to press exports. Nostr users are very helpful but I am fast running out of #asknostr tokens :)
I love cabbage, and I really like how they keep on coming back. They are heavy feeders so it is helpful that they aren't a flashbang veg. #Permaculture will never feed the world, but it sure keeps us close to the land and excited by #nature. image
#asknostr what I am supposed to see on the working localhost:4869 page for the #citrine relay I installed on my Android phone? After much node.js-ing, I have now got as far as Terminal confirming everything is talking and reading correctly, but progress is stalled at a message on Chrome saying it sees a Nostr relay or websocket. But that's it. What am I missing? Or is that the feedback? #relay Also any idea how to see and rectify the errors indicated on my private relay entry in Amethyst? cheers
This year was the biggest olive harvest in living memory, and the almonds are bowing under the weight too. Not a drop of irrigation, the almonds are not an ecological disaster when left to their own devices. However the price to pay is less yield per tree. The olive's alternate fruiting cycle means this year is near zero harvest for us. And it is the drive for consistent yield and price that motivates the questionable practices of the mega farms who have driven their input costs up and the prices down en route to becoming mega farms. It is a ludicrous system of misaligned incentives that the consumer, the farmer and nature pays a heavy price for. Or we could just eat a little less and leave much of the almond industry to nature and find more purpose in the orchards beyond monoculture almonds. #chickens #growstr #Spain #homesteading image
Another rabbit hole, relays this time, thanks to Nostr and @Derek Ross and @Vitor Pamplona #asknostr how do I see what's on the server? I found websocat, am I on the right track? Another voyage into the unknown. image
Imagine if all the how to sites online could install a zaps lightning option for tips. And a Nostr comment box, much like you can/could (it has been a while!) post to Discourse from a Wordpress site. So much useful info being given out for free with no way of readers showing their appreciation with a token tip. Even leaving a quick message is a faff with emails and names. #asknostr
What do you think? I like my blackberries like my Nostr. The best food is free. And wild. And nutritious and flourishing, despite not following the rules for how mainstream food is grown. I have to lie down now, analogies are so draining. image #foodstr #Nostr #Spain #asknostr
There is a great movie called Planeta Verde which really highlights the lunacy of so many socially acceptable practices. When I was a young teen, I kept chickens. My neighbour had some hens too and he was preparing one for lunch. He showed me how to wring a chicken's neck, He was a vicar, a grown up, so I did as I was told and watched. I wasn't squeamish, I just thought that it was a ridiculous way to kill a chicken. I also recall how he seemed to enjoy it a little too much. Maybe it was embarrassed laughter because the poor little bird ended up with a neck like a giraffe by the time he finished with it No doubt it tasted great after he gave grace. So I was introduced to killing birds by an adult and many of the cloth, to boot. And it really was no big deal - then. I never culled a chicken that way ever. I learnt a far more humane way, if there is such a way. The broom handle approach. Chickens do go completely limp and calm if held by their back legs, so you combine that with placing their head on the ground while they are oblivious to what's going on. With your foot you move the broom handle over the back of the birds neck. And in one move, both feet on the handle and yank. It's very effective. So when adults said it was time to eat a chicken, I would cull them. Weird how we say cull, like we are nicing up the word kill. I learnt how to pluck them. My old man used to be a butcher so he took over from there I remember the first time, him being the dad, taking charge. I also remember him turning away from as he started gagging, as he went through a process he must have done a thousand times when he was a pro butcher. I look back and wonder, why those adults felt they had to teach me what they did. But I especially remember my dad. I am sure he was having some sort of epiphany as he did what he had always done as a younger man, to earn a living or whatever the justification was I don't want to piss off the carnivores who might read this. I was one til aged 50, something changed in my head and I literally took the delicious half chewed fillet steak out my mouth and never ate meat since. And I don't want to antagonise vegans, because whilst I eat mainly a "vegan diet" I exploit chickens, eat my own eggs and need goats cheese to keep me healthy, so I am still the enemy in the eyes of the extreme view holders. But I'm a middle way kind of person. I understand perfectly well that there is a time when animals need to be put out their misery and, you know, if a chicken is suffering, I can help speed their end in relative peace. But to show my daughter how to kill and prep a chicken for Sunday lunch, as some sort of rite of passage, I don't get it. And I am sure she would not be as compliant as I was her age if I put her through the process.. I promised a friend, a person so spiritual, with the wisdom already of the aliens from the Planets Verde looking at our society practices in horror and bemusement.I promised her to take care of my chickens without resorting to the pot. As long as they are laying eggs there is absolutely no food justification for killing a bird. After they stop peak laying, 2 years, they don't lay as many eggs, but it's not zero. And even when they do stop being "productive" in year 5 maybe,, all the while they are still fabulous little shitters and scratchers, friends of the soil. It's not the easiest option, but it will be a no cull policy on my upcoming little chicken farm. The birds can live near free while technically being exploited and we can all get fat on eggs. #chickens #vegan #carnivore #foodstr
Hi @fountain app, I am a big fan but, I dunno, it's not a seamless experience these days . Doesn't want anything to do with amber or nos2-fox which between them sign me in to every other client. Had to paste in my nsec for fountain to let me in. Third time lucky on that. Doh. What ever happened to wallet feature? Settings are in different places now. Ie Looks like I'm set up on wallet page with sats in and out, at 0 presumably because I haven't participated yet. So I want to top up the wallet. Used to be all there for sending, receiving. Nothing. I'm getting annoyed now! In settings> payments it says Lightning wallet not enabled? What? It showed a random number@fountain.fm. I have changed the lightning address to my username and updated. Nothing. Still not enabled. Another doom loop. No feedback message. The wallet is pretty key to this app, no clues how to enable it now? I'm sure it's me and the pros are rolling their eyes, but I'm not a novice on Fountain. But if I were and knew nothing about it beyond the hype, I'd be long gone. Cheers
