William Stout, 1977 #artstr

A group of blind men heard that a strange animal, called an elephant, had been brought to the town, but none of them were aware of its shape and form. Out of curiosity, they said: "We must inspect and know it by touch, of which we are capable". So, they sought it out, and when they found it they groped about it. The first person, whose hand landed on the trunk, said, "This being is like a thick snake". For another one whose hand reached its ear, it seemed like a kind of fan. As for another person, whose hand was upon its leg, said, the elephant is a pillar like a tree-trunk. The blind man who placed his hand upon its side said the elephant, "is a wall". Another who felt its tail, described it as a rope. The last felt its tusk, stating the elephant is that which is hard, smooth and like a spear. #parablestr

List of thought-terminating clichรฉs:
"It is what it is."
"That's just the way it is."
"Everything happens for a reason."
"Let's agree to disagree."
"It'll all work out."
"You're overreacting."
"Calm down."
"Boys will be boys."
"That's just how people are."
"We're all doing our best."
"There's no use crying over spilled milk."
"That's just the way things are."
"Don't be so sensitive."
"They're just jealous."
"Live and let live."
"That's politics."
"You can't change human nature."
"It's part of life."
"Everyone does it."
Thought-terminating clichรฉs are short, familiar phrases that halt critical thinking by offering ready-made answers or dismissals instead of engaging with nuance. They function as conversational shortcuts that deflect questions, invalidate feelings, and close debateโoften protecting social comfort or existing power structures by discouraging further inquiry. Overused in personal, political, and institutional contexts, these clichรฉs ease momentary tension but perpetuate misunderstanding and prevent meaningful change.
