More than 1,000 internet-facing GitLab servers remain unpatched against CVE-2026-97229, a maximum-severity vulnerability being actively exploited, according to Shadowserver. The flaw is an integer overflow in the CI/CD Regular Expression Compiler. Under certain conditions, an unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary code through a specially crafted regular expression in a pipeline configuration.
GitLab released fixes on October 12 in Community and Enterprise Edition versions 19.4.2, 19.3.5 and 19.2.8, and urged self-managed installations to upgrade immediately. GitLab.com is already patched, and GitLab Dedicated customers need no action. CISA has added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. The remaining exposed servers show that an available fix has not yet eliminated the risk of remote code execution.
