I’ve been rethinking the “shop class” idea a bit… The more I worked on it, the more I felt like it needed cohesion instead of just isolated lessons or random projects. I keep coming back to the idea that people connect more deeply to objects that feel useful, lasting, and worth building. Still thinking a lot about what a modern version of learning shop skills could look like for people who never really got that experience… #grownostr #diy #woodworking

Most people assume more features = better tools… In reality, the tools that last the longest are usually the simplest ones on the shelf. #grownostr #tools image

When working on a project that requires extra attention to measurement… Like a cabinet project or furniture. It is a good idea to use a designated tape measure for the whole project. Not switching between tape measures… Not all tape measures have the same measurement accuracy… As seen in the picture, each tape has a different length inch. Use a mix of tape measures with different size inches… And you’ll have problems with fit. #grownostr #woodworking #diy image

Good morning nostr! Over the weekend, I tried a new wood treatment for the shop. I was wanting an old school wood preservative because modern water based products do not last. (And look like crap) I found a Scandinavian wood treatment using 1:1:1 parts pine tar, boiled linseed oil, and mineral spirits. I applied with an airless paint sprayer. The look far exceeded my expectations as it was applied on weathered cedar siding that looked flat. The oil really brings out the grain and depth. The first picture is one side half sprayed. The look gets better as it soaks in. #grownostr #diy #coffeechain #woodworking

Happy Friday!!! I have just received the first part of the linseed oil/pine tar treatment for the shop cedar siding… I will hopefully apply it to one or two sides this weekend. It is 1:1:1 parts boiled linseed oil, pine tar, and mineral spirits. I will end up applying two coats. Should last longer and look better than paint. What do you have planned this weekend? #asknostr #grownostr #diy

Something beginners often run into when they’re cutting parts in the shop… wood or metal… They focus on hitting an exact number. They’ll aim for a perfect measurement every time. What usually causes problems is not thinking about the range the part can fall into. The part doesn’t need to be exact… It needs to be within an acceptable limit so it still functions. That limit is tolerance… #grownostr #woodworking #metalworking

Had a conversation with a CNC repair technician working on one of our very specialized machines. I mentioned I’ve been building a class around basic shop skills… tools, measurement, and problem solving. He said the older experienced guys are leaving his company, and there’s no one there to teach this kind of work anymore. It made me realize there is a real shortage of places where you can learn the practical skills this kind of work depends on. Curious how many people have run into that in their field? #asknostr #grownostr

So, if capital gains tax is a tax on your fiat currency gains on your investment… And inflation causes all prices to rise… including your investment… Then, our government is taxing us on their devaluation of the currency… Sounds about right…

I am working on an essential tools list for beginners… One of the tools I suggest is a pair of groove joint pliers. However, I really think the Knipex Cobra Plier looks to be superior. Does anyone have experience with this brand? I may have to test one! #asknostr #grownostr #tools image
