The JWST can transmit 5.42Mbps sustained from ~1,500,000 km away. The ASIC responsible for converting the analog signal to digital runs at 11 milliwatts so as not to produce too much heat to interfere with the sensor. image

If you lived during the Agricultural Revolution or the Industrial Revolution, would you be able to fathom the scale of the transformative shifts underway and their implications for human civilisation? Due to our survival instincts, humans have an inherent negativity bias, which makes it challenging to equally weight the positive changes which are taking place. Here are a few technologies that make me optimistic for humanity's future: - Bitcoin - Nostr - Permaculture, aquaculture and vertical farming - Water harvesting - Solar and fusion - Lithium-ion and nickel–hydrogen battery storage - Linux and BSD - Quantum compute - AI / ML - Robotics and automation - Material engineering - 3D printing Technological change carries existential risk for humanity, from societal and birth rate collapse to information, kinetic and biological warfare. But it's easy to see the negative without truly appreciating the extraordinary potential of these technologies for humanity. We are living in revolutionary times. image
