When fathers decide to sell a daughter into marriage, that is a choice made under terrible circumstances. “I had no money to pay the medical expenses. So I sold my daughter to a relative. If I had money, I would never have taken this decision,” said a father. Sons are not being sold in the same way. The burden of survival is falling on girls. Most reports focus on poverty, famine, Taliban policies, and funding shortages at organizations like UNICEF and UNHCR. Children should never be the price of survival. But in Afghanistan, hunger and poverty have become so severe that some fathers are selling their daughters into marriage to feed their families.
