Just goes to show you: anything's possible at a conclave. I was 100% certain the old rules would apply here, and an American would be off the table. Pope Francis hated Americans, by the way. Amazing.

One of the realities of taxes for priests: the IRS, because it operates on a Protestant model, sees us as "self-employed." I'm about as self-employed as a prisoner making license plates, as the nature of the Church dictates that the Bishop "employs" me to assist him in his ministry; I am fully dependent upon the consent of the Bishop in everything that I do.
