Don't make any mistakes about what this Fable/Mythos lockdown is all about. I've been cagey about it up until now, but let's spell it out: This is marketing. It's all marketing, with a little help from some friends inside the U.S. government who will be rewarded handsomely when OpenAI/Anthropic go public. It's the same playbook as always. "This model is simply too dangerous!" OpenAI declared the same about GPT-2. They always say this. Don't let 'em work you.
I feel like maybe a lot of people don't remember how cool it was when we all lived in small networks. Maybe they're too young. BBSes. IRC. Newsgroups. It was great when we had smaller communities, when people interacted with a limited network. I would come home from school every day and look forward to 300bps telenetting in to Mnematics Videotex in '93, eager to talk to ten people who used the same service. It was great. We all knew each other, hung out for hours chatting about whatever. Nostr being small, or "lacking engagement" doesn't really matter. What matters is the community you build here, even if it's a small one. I mean, you people even FIGHT like family! Cherish that.
Time for a movie this weekend? One could do a whole lot worse than Andrei Tarkovsky's masterpiece. I just watched it again for the first time this year. Probably my favorite film. image
Anthropic's models will be "tweaked" and back in operation within a matter of days. They'll bury the specifics in jargon, but will ensure all of us that it's both powerful and safe to use now. Honest. The IPO is estimated for the Fall, so be prepared to buy at any moment.
Fable and Mythos are just too powerful. They're weaponized liquid gold. NOT for export. How many days to the IPO?
My geographical boundaries were left fairly unscathed last night. But just across the county line, Streator got hit pretty bad. Prayers for all those affected.
I was standing under the awning of a local funeral home. Gnarly clouds, but nothing dangerous. A terrible tornado hit my village about a decade ago. We don't need another one. (and yeah, I'm one of those psychos who goes outside during these things: I'm from Nebraska. 🤷‍♂)
Tons of tornado action in Central/Northern Illinois where I am. My town is spared for now, but lots of action in the counties adjacent. Prayers for all.
You'd think this village I live in would solve the whole "we're inevitably going to lose power during a modest wind storm," but nah. Gotta keep it predictable.
GM. Another hot and humid day around these parts. Thankful I’m mostly indoors today. And hey, I get to start an awesome experiment on GrapheneOS (no Play Store, not even once). So at least there’s that. image
If I want bad warm beer, I'll just take three cans of Busch Light and put them in the sun. Quite the koozie. Don't drink crap beer, dudes and dudettes. View quoted note →
Hail, a Tornado Warning, and I need to get to the hospital for a sick call. Wonderful.
Life is way too beautiful for us to be sidetracked by our own bullsquash. Better just to keep an eye out for Goodness, Truth, and Beauty. It’s everywhere.
Humid and muggy, but always beautiful. Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. image
