Between 2005 and 2019, approximately 26,000 parents were wrongly accused by the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst) of making fraudulent childcare benefit claims, resulting in demands to repay their allowances in full. In many cases this amounted to tens of thousands of euros, driving families into severe financial hardship.
The accusations primarily targeted parents of colour and especially single mothers — particularly families with heritage in the former Dutch colonies in the Caribbean 🇧🇶 and 🇸🇷 Suriname. For the parents of more than 2,000 children, the financial and legal chaos even led to loss of custody of their children.
