I think yes. The way people live their faith is influenced by the context of their time and by the cultural landscape of their environment.
What I meant by “the cultural update of Christianity” - referring to Hillsong - is that before this “guitar church” movement, there was a pretty strict blueprint for how (not) to praise God.
Hillsong, and then many other churches, brought an authentic worship model for the modern age, including torn jeans and electric guitars, while still putting Jesus first and not bending the Bible at all.
Yes, they’ve had issues, and yes, for some people it’s “too flashy,” but that’s how the world looks - and that’s what I mean by the culture of Christianity.
