I had no choice but to go to a Normy Ordo parish (the best one around) for Ash Wed. Not a word about the significance of ashes or about death. As expected, I received ashes with the words "Repent and believe the gospel." We did hear that fasting doesn't have to be about food -- we can fast from things like "negativity" or "gossiping." (How do I do that? One gossip session, plus two smaller gossip sessions that together don't equal one full gossip session?) Also, we can engage in almsgiving by supporting (non-Catholic) Catholic Charities. It might have been better for me to skip Ash Wednesday Mass and just go to the nearby Adoration chapel. I'd be in a better mood and I would've actually been able to pray (without Christian campfire songs distracting me). It is right and just to go to the #TLM whenever possible.
