Should I record a quick overview of this Pokémon card manager I’ve been slowly building? It’s been a long, meandering project at this point, and I’m probably the only one who’ll ever actually use it, but it might be fun to show what it’s turned into and hear what you think.

I keep seeing a lot of anti-AI and anti-crypto arguments that hinge on the idea that water is being “used up.” Data centers get described as if they’re consuming water the way a fire consumes wood, like it’s being permanently removed from the world. Maybe I’m missing something, but that framing feels strange to me. In most cases the water is being used for cooling, it absorbs heat, some of it evaporates, and it goes back into the broader water cycle. It isn’t disappearing. It’s changing state and location for a while. That’s not what people seem to be reacting to. What I don’t understand is why “water use” gets talked about as if it means water is being destroyed or permanently removed from the system. Cooling water changes temperature, sometimes changes phase, moves around, then re-enters the same cycle it’s always been in. So why is this the thing that my kids ask about? 🙃

It’s weird how satisfying it is to have a project you know will make your life better and because it’s modular it already is in some ways.

Adding inventory management to my card management system

It’s been a long time since I last sourced cards to sell, and I’m trying to recalibrate a bit. If I assume a worst-case scenario, say I buy 100 cards and can only sell them for $1.25 each, how high should I let my cost per card go before it stops being worth adding to inventory? At what point am I just trading time for nothing, or even losing money, $0.30? $0.40? My gut says around $0.30 per card shipped feels safe. Between the mailers, thick envelopes, card savers, and penny sleeves, I’m probably at $0.10–$0.15 in materials per card. Shipping is paid by the buyer, so that would leave something like $0.50–$0.75 per card before fees and time. I should probably sit down and do the exact math, but I’m curious how other people think about this.

Yes, the world can be a pretty shitty place if you get down into the weeds, but it’s also the best world we’ve had in the history of humanity. Too few people focus on how good things are, statistically speaking. I try not to live inside social media. I pay more attention to what’s happening locally, and if things are good here, then I feel good. That’s most of what actually matters. If things are bad where you are, do something about it. If they’re not, then do whatever you want, be happy, and grow from there. You’re not on the bottom rung of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Should be a good initial logo for YoYoStr

I’m thinking about repurposing my small Discord server. Right now it’s called “MikeMonty,” mostly tied to my YouTube channel, and it has about five people in it. I’m considering renaming it to YoYoStr and shifting its purpose to support the website and community around that project. The idea would be to use it as a place where people can ask questions about the site, report issues, or talk through things that I haven’t built proper pages or documentation for yet. I’d also link to it directly from the YoYoStr website so there’s a clear place to go when someone gets stuck. If you’ve done something similar, or have thoughts on whether this is a good move, I’m open to hearing them.
