This is wild… New York Governor Kathy Hochul has deployed 750 National Guard members, 250 state troopers, and police officers from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to the subway system in response to a series of violent crimes on the subway.0 The National Guard soldiers will patrol the subway platforms and check riders' bags for weapons, a show of force not often seen since the days following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. However, some critics have expressed concerns that the checks could lead to racial profiling.2 The National Guard soldiers searching bags will not carry military-grade assault rifles.3 Passengers can refuse the inspection but will be denied entry at that subway station.
