We need a new cultural enlightenment. I want to be a part of it.
Morning, everyone. The school year is fast approaching and I’ve been working on a series of posts about Bad Therapy, by Abigail Shier, and its implications for schools. I’m hoping to get those posts knocked out this morning so the next several days I can prepare for the school year.
I plan to post everything on nostr first using Habla.news.
Have a great day everyone!

We really could’ve used Hitch’s cutting insight over the last decade.

It’s notoriously (relatively) bad at math. Which from my perspective as a math teacher is really interesting. At one point, like a year ago, Stephen wolfram was talking about integrating wolfram alpha so it would recognize a math problem, send it to wolfram alpha, then return the result. In the screenshots I saw it even link to the wolfram alpha computations, effectively showing its work. View quoted note →
Maybe the most important article I’ve read this summer.

We have a sand volleyball tournament tomorrow and my daughter worked hard on these to keep us fueled up throughout the day! #foodstr

It’s impressive how bad it is. Elon has really driven it into a complete hellscape. I’m not saying it was a panacea before - far from it. But my god it was a lot better than now. View quoted note →

Currently watching the US women’s volleyball team play in the semifinals. Let’s go! 🇺🇸
At the rate I’m adding books to my nightstand versus the rate I’m reading them I’m going to need a bigger nightstand soon. 🙃
This really is amazing. I hope it’s as private as they claim. And I LOVE having the option to switch between models.
Claude is apparently so “safe” it will answer almost none of my queries. Which maybe says more about me than it does about Claude…

I am writing a blog post and was conflicted about whether to use a semi-colon or a dash. Boldly went with a semi-colon. Checked with chatGPT and according to the AI overlords, I nailed it.

I recommend all parents, teachers, therapists, and any other people concerned about children give this book a read.
Here’s the description: From the author of Irreversible Damage, an investigation into a mental health industry that is harming, not healing, American children
In virtually every way that can be measured, Gen Z’s mental health is worse than that of previous generations. Youth suicide rates are climbing, antidepressant prescriptions for children are common, and the proliferation of mental health diagnoses has not helped the staggering number of kids who are lonely, lost, sad and fearful of growing up. What’s gone wrong with America’s youth?
In Bad Therapy, bestselling investigative journalist Abigail Shrier argues that the problem isn’t the kids—it’s the mental health experts. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with child psychologists, parents, teachers, and young people, Shrier explores the ways the mental health industry has transformed the way we teach, treat, discipline, and even talk to our kids. She reveals that most of the therapeutic approaches have serious side effects and few proven benefits. Among her unsettling findings:
Talk therapy can induce rumination, trapping children in cycles of anxiety and depression
Social Emotional Learning handicaps our most vulnerable children, in both public schools and private
“Gentle parenting” can encourage emotional turbulence – even violence – in children as they lash out, desperate for an adult in charge
Mental health care can be lifesaving when properly applied to children with severe needs, but for the typical child, the cure can be worse than the disease. Bad Therapy is a must-read for anyone questioning why our efforts to bolster America’s kids have backfired—and what it will take for parents to lead a turnaround.

I gave up social media since about June 5 but I downloaded Twitter on Saturday when I heard about the assassination attempt. I just deleted it again. It’s such a bloody cesspool I can’t believe anyone voluntarily spends time there and I feel bad for people who have to use it for their profession.
Fb and instagram have lots of problems but there’s something about the structure of Twitter and the algorithm that just creates a black hole of misery. (Changing the color scheme from blue to black makes a lot of sense.)
It’s 71, sunny, and breezy. It’s, dare I say, perfect weather. Especially after the heat we’ve been having. ☀️
