Overprotective parents raise anxious kids.
They send the message that the world is dangerous, nobody can be trusted, and that they are not equipped or competent enough to raise them to be independent.

We need a new cultural enlightenment. I want to be a part of it.
Kids only ate like half of it so it ended up being my pre-workout. Lol

Chicken coop update. A lot of hours of work between the last update and now.

Chicken coop progress update

The math classroom that we math teachers enjoy being part of won't be optimal for mathematical novices. We should generally resist the urge to use that environment as our aim.
(This remains true until and unless students have mastered the concepts that they will be working with.)
Merry Christmas!
(We are torching our Christmas tree on this fine spring evening.)

Now substack has reels/tiktoks front and center. An app built for writers of words and newsletters with WORDS has put an ungodly amount of resources into video. Specifically short form video which will probably drive people to read the actual fucking newletters less.
Why can't a thing just be a thing.
We are starting a flock. All you permanerds wore off on me (at least a little bit - haha). Also one of my colleagues has been raising hens for a few years and convinced me. I buy eggs from her and we love fresh eggs from chickens who can free range. We’ll see how it goes!

I will never stop beating this drum. #education
"Get good at explaining things clearly so students understand that you’re competent and trust that you can teach them well. This will help you manage your classroom, especially early on in your career before you’ve developed a reputation. It will give you richer knowledge of your content. Then gradually bring in inquiry activities in targeted ways. To bring in one more analogy, you can’t build a nice house on a weak foundation. It doesn’t matter how nice the landscaping looks if the house is on a slant and basement fills with water every time it rains. Even if the landscaping is what people see when they drive by – and your favorite thing to talk about. "

Explaining well is foundational to teaching well
The ability to explain things clearly is a necessary condition for being a good math teacher.

We must speak out against tyrants and authoritarians, even when they’re on our own side. In fact, this may be the most important time to do it.
Gn, Nostr. Keep building a better world.
Good morning, everyone! The days are getting longer and I love it. We had a real winter here in Michigan for a solid 3 months and even if we get more of it, at least the days will keep getting longer.
Is anyone familiar with micro.blog and know of an alternative built on Nostr? Habla.news is close. Maybe Damus is basically it as it allows long form and short form posts, rendered as such. But it's not quite like having a blog. (What I like about micro.blog is that I post short or long thoughts and also add a few stand alone pages. It feels like a website. You can see what I mean: ) #asknostr
What I don't like about it is that, as near as I can tell, the only way for anyone to interact with posts on micro.blog is for someone to have an account, which basically no one does. I feel like Nostr fixes this.

This is fantastic. And goes well beyond just laying out the problems with technology in schools. #education
Jonathon Haidt put it well: As parents around the world try to save their kids from a phone-based childhood, their efforts are undermined by schools that put a laptop or tablet on every desk. This video is the most compelling one I've seen, about why this must stop.
Everything is fine.
