Stellenweise immer noch aktuelle Darstellung verschiedener Zusammenhänge, insbesondere was die Wirkung von Verdrängung bei traumatischen Erfahrungen betrifft. Interessant ist auch Freud's Vorhersage, dass Mediziner sich "chemische Stoffe [wünschen werden], deren Verabreichung bestimmte Neurosen produziert und aufhebt[, auch wenn] die Wahrscheinlichkeit ... nicht für solche Lösungen des Problems [spricht]." Denn eine rein chemische Behandlung psychischer Zustände mag zwar einzelne Symptome verändern, aber die wahre Ursache wird damit in der Regel ignoriert, wodurch auch keine grundlegende Heilung möglich ist.

Often still up-to-date presentation of various mechanisms, especially with regard to the effect of repression on traumatic experiences. Freud's prediction that "physicians will wish for chemical substances, so that their administration will produce and abolish certain neuroses [even if] the probability ... does not favor such solutions to the problem” is very true. But this ignores that a purely chemical treatment of mental conditions may change individual symptoms, but the true cause is usually ignored, which means that no fundamental cure will be reached.
