Markets Decide the Utility of Products and Services, Not the People Who Create Them
This is a lesson founders, companies and service providers have fought for as long as markets have existed. One example is Volvo. Their goal was to build a "fun and cool car", something that functioned like a family sedan but performed like a sports car. The problem was Volvo built one of the safest cars of its time in the 70s and 80s, and the market branded Volvo as "safe". The market is always the final boss.
Volvo tried fighting this with their marketing, every dollar they spent doing so was a mistake. They should have made safety their lead value proposition.
Bitcoin is another example. To some people Bitcoin is only supposed to be "P2P Cash", something used for buying and selling outside of fiat currency. The market had other ideas. It branded Bitcoin as a "store of value", "a good investment", "a way to beat inflation", "digital capital" and "programmable money".
Some people continue to fight this, but they can barely be heard above the market that has made Bitcoin one of the best performing assets of the last 20 years. Again, the market is always the final boss.
There is a lesson here for founders, small business owners, entrepreneurs and anyone selling a product or service. When your customers consistently brand you differently than your own vision, sit down, shut up for a minute and take notes. Then lean into it.
One customer is not "the market". Ten random comments are not necessarily the market either. But when the same message keeps showing up from customers over and over again, sit down, shut up for a few moments, take notes and pay attention.
You are not smarter than the market. Always remember that.

1. You can buy cans of black spray paint at Walmart for under 3 bucks.
2. Paint on a solar panel is a bad idea, it will block all the light and make the panel useless.
3. From a distance a panel sprayed with black paint would look just fine.
4. Flock Cameras are solar powered and the area of their panel surface is 595 square inches
5. A single can of spray paint can fully cover 2880 square inches.
6. 2880 divided by 595 is 4.84
