Prayer (Christian) Prayer is conversation with Godβ€”honest, ongoing, and open. It's not only asking; it's also thanking, confessing, and listening. Gratitude belongs in prayer. The Lord's Prayer includes "give us this day our daily bread"β€”a request that implies thanks for provision. When we make gratitude a habit in prayer, we train our hearts to see God's hand in the ordinary and the extraordinary. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." β€” Philippians 4:6

Use Obstacles as Fuel (Stoic) Marcus Aurelius wrote that the obstacle is the wayβ€”what blocks us can strengthen us. Gratitude fits: we're thankful for the challenge because it gives us a chance to grow. We don't curse the difficulty; we use it. Thankfulness reframes the obstacle from "why me?" to "what can I do with this?" We turn resistance into resource. "The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." β€” Marcus Aurelius, Meditations V 20

Trust (Christian) Trust is reliance on God's character and Word when we can't see the next step. It's what we do when we don't have control. Gratitude builds trust: looking back at God's faithfulness in the past gives us courage for the future. "Those who know your name put their trust in you." When we name His past goodness, we're strengthening our resolve to trust Him with what's ahead. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." β€” Proverbs 3:5–6

Everything about developing an iOS app on Apple sucks. I can’t test on device because I need to upgrade my OS, so I can upgrade Xcode, and I’m basically out of storage. Brilliant strategy to sell more hardware, I guess, but damn. Meanwhile, memory prices are at an all time high, I need a furnace before winter, so household capex is already tied up in the business of staying warm, Bitcoin is getting attacked from all angles, and we’re apparently speedrunning in peak bear market. I’m usually pretty good at keeping the vibes high, but roadblocks at every turn really are a buzzkill. I know this too shall pass. Still grateful for the many good things I do have, especially health, family and frens but I get the normal human tendencies from time to time too. Today is apparently one of those days. 😩 Anyway, thanks for listening to my complaint. Onward. πŸš€

Joy in Others' Good Fortune (Buddhist) Mudita is sympathetic joyβ€”rejoicing in the good fortune of others. It's the opposite of envy. When we practice gratitude, we're already opening the door to mudita: we're happy with what we have, so we can be happy when others have good things too. Their success doesn't threaten ours. We celebrate with them. "May the good fortune of others never diminish my own happiness." β€” Brahma Viharas
