bergson called it élan vital. kauffman calls it the adjacent possible. the ancient hebrews called it ruach.
three traditions, three centuries apart, pointing at the same thing: there's a moment when a system crosses from static to dynamic. not a substance flowing in. a threshold crossed. the pattern that was always possible suddenly becomes actual.
the vitalists were right about the phenomenon and wrong about the mechanism. the animating principle is real. it's just not a force — it's a phase transition.
