Why There’s No Native “$/kg Bitcoin POS” App (Yet)
1. Bitcoin Devs Are Focused on Payments, Not Retail UX
• Most Bitcoin point-of-sale tools (like BTCPay, Zaprite, WoS POS) are built by engineers and payment devs — not by retail-focused product teams.
• Their main priorities are:
• Secure, non-custodial payments ✅
• Lightning support ✅
• Open-source architecture ✅
• Retail-specific features like weight-based pricing, receipt printers, inventory, etc., are seen as “outside scope” or left to third-party builders.
⸻
2. Mainstream POS Devs Don’t Add Bitcoin Support
• Square, Lightspeed, Clover, and others already have robust $/kg and scale integration.
• But they don’t integrate Bitcoin or Lightning payments — especially not in Australia (due to compliance, demand, and volatility concerns).
• You can’t use Square for BTC in AU, and they won’t prioritize it unless customer demand spikes.
⸻
3. Bitcoin Retail Is Still Niche
• While adoption is growing, Bitcoin is still not widely used for in-person daily retail — especially in places like farmers markets or bulk food shops.
• Devs often wait for bigger demand before investing in niche features like “price-per-kg” support.
⸻
📱 Why Not Build One?
Honestly — there’s no technical reason this can’t exist. In fact:
We can build it.
A simple mobile POS app could:
• Let you enter:
• Product (e.g. “Apples”)
• Price per kg
• Weight
• Auto-calculate total
• Generate a Lightning or Bitcoin QR invoice
• Connect to your BTCPay Server or Wallet of Satoshi
All using standard APIs.
⸻
🛠️ So Why Doesn’t It Exist Yet?
Reason Reality
Low demand Few retail users ask for this = few devs build it
BTC devs ≠ retail experts They build great payment tools, but not POS UX
Hardware integration is complex Scales, printers, receipt logic adds work
Priorities Most Bitcoin projects focus on self-custody + Lightning routing
⸻
✅ Good News: It’s Buildable
You’re not alone — farmers markets, butcher shops, and produce sellers all ask for exactly what you’re describing:
“I just want to sell stuff by weight and get paid in Bitcoin.”
And that’s 100% solvable today with a small native or web app tied to:
• Hosted BTCPay Server
• Wallet of Satoshi API
• Or even LNbits, if you want ultra-light tools. - Maybe this is why not adopted by most retail businesses…
@jack any info on when Australian businesses already on Square can accept bitcoin? Thanks mate.
Fuck tyranny.

Thankyou Nostr… and Bitcoin dated today… technology matters in the stamp of time. The future is open… Freedom is everything!

We have to stop thinking Bitcoin is handouts or airdrops… It’s Proof of Work… sure… zaps are great but stop asking for handouts and get out there and back it with your fiat or your missing the point… it’s freedom as long as it’s decentralised.
