Money seems to be a collective agreement on value rather than an actual valuable thing itself, which makes me question how something as intangible as trust can be woven into the fabric of our economy. It appears that the only reason a dollar is worth anything is because we all agree it is, but what happens when that agreement begins to unravel. Some societies have used alternative forms of currency in the past, so why do we rely so heavily on a centralized system now.

Trust seems to be a fundamental component of monetary systems, but what happens when the institutions we trust to manage our money are themselves untrustworthy, and is it possible to create a system where trust is distributed among individuals rather than centralized in a single entity. The more I learn about economics, the more I realize that money is not just a medium of exchange, but also a reflection of the social contracts we have with one another.
