18. Saturday after the II Sunday of Lent: The Passion of Christ Worked Our Salvation as Redemption
Saturday of the II Week of Lent
Scripture says: "Not with corruptible things, like silver or gold, were you redeemed from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot" (1 Peter 1:18). In another place: "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us" (Galatians 3:13). And what is said of the Apostle "having become a curse for us" means that He suffered for us on the wood. Therefore, by His Passion, He redeemed us. By sin, man was enslaved in two ways:
1. First, by the servitude of sin; for "whoever commits sin is a slave of sin" (John 8:34) and "whoever is defeated is enslaved by the one who has defeated him" (2 Peter 2:19). Now, since the devil defeated man by inducing him to sin, man was made a slave of the devil.
2. Second, regarding the liability to punishment by which man was bound, according to the justice of God. And this is also a form of slavery; for it is typical of the slave to suffer what he does not want, contrary to the free man, who can dispose of himself as he wishes.
Thus, since the Passion of Christ is a sufficient and superabundant satisfaction for sin and for the liability of the human race, His Passion was like a price by which we were delivered from both forms of slavery. Thus, the satisfaction by which we make satisfaction for ourselves or for others is considered a price by which we are redeemed from sin and penalty, according to Scripture: "Redeem your sins by almsgiving" (Daniel 4:24).
Now, Christ made satisfaction, not by giving money or in any similar way, but by giving Himself — the greatest good — for us. Therefore, it is said that the Passion of Christ is our redemption.
Man, by sinning, incurred an obligation both to God and to the devil:
— For, by guilt, he offended God and subjected himself to the devil, by his consent. And thus, because of the guilt, he did not become a servant of God; rather, by turning away from His service, he fell into the slavery of the devil, by God's just permission, due to the offense committed against Him.
— But, regarding the penalty, man primarily incurred an obligation to God, as the supreme judge; and to the devil, as his executioner, according to the Gospel (Matthew 5:25): "Lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer," that is, to the cruel angel of punishment, as Chrysostom interprets. Therefore, although the devil unjustly held, to the extent of his power, the man deceived by his fraud under his yoke, both regarding guilt and regarding penalty, nonetheless, it was just that man should suffer this, by God's permission with respect to guilt, and by the order of the same God with respect to penalty.
Thus, with regard to God, justice demanded that man be redeemed; but not with respect to the devil.

18. Sábado depois do II domingo da Quaresma: A Paixão de Cristo obrou nossa salvação a modo de Redenção.
Sábado da II Semana da Quaresma
Diz a Escritura: «Não por ouro nem por prata, que são coisas corruptíveis, haveis sido resgatados da vossa vã existência, que recebestes de vossos pais; mas pelo precioso sangue de Cristo, como de um cordeiro imaculado e sem contaminação alguma.» (1 Pd 1, 18). Noutro lugar: «Cristo nos remiu da maldição da lei, feito ele mesmo maldição por nós» (Gl 3, 13). E dito do Apóstolo «feito maldição por nós» significa que sofreu por nós no madeiro. Logo, pela sua Paixão nos remiu. Pelo pecado o homem estava escravizado de dois modos:
1. Primeiro, pela servidão do pecado; pois, «todo o que comete pecado é escravo do pecado» (Jo 8, 344) e «todo o que é vencido é escravo daquele que venceu» (2 Pd 2, 19). Ora, como o diabo venceu ao homem, induzindo-o ao pecado, o homem foi feito escravo do diabo.
2. Segundo, quanto ao reato da pena pela qual o homem estava ligado, segundo a justiça de Deus. E esta também é uma escravidão; pois é próprio do escravo sofrer o que não quer, ao contrário do homem livre, que pode dispor de si mesmo como quer.
Por onde, sendo a Paixão de Cristo uma satisfação suficiente e superabundante pelo pecado e pelo reato do gênero humano, a sua Paixão foi um como preço, pelo qual fomos livrados de uma e outra escravidão. Assim, a satisfação pela qual satisfazemos por nós ou por outrem é considerada um preço pelo qual nos remimos do pecado e da pena, segundo a Escritura: «Redime os teus pecados com a esmola» (Dn 4, 24).
Ora, Cristo satisfez, não certo dando dinheiro nem por qualquer forma semelhante, mas dando-se a ele próprio — bem máximo — por nós. Por isso é que se diz ser a Paixão de Cristo nossa redenção.

O homem, pecando, contraiu uma obrigação tanto para com Deus como para o diabo:
— Pois, pela culpa, ofendeu a Deus e sujeitou-se ao diabo, pelo seu consentimento. E assim, em razão da culpa, não se tornou servo de Deus; mas antes, afastando-se do seu serviço, incorreu na escravidão do diabo, por justa permissão de Deus, por causa da ofensa contra ele cometida.
— Mas, quanto à pena, o homem contraiu principalmente uma obrigação para com Deus, como supremo juiz; e para com o diabo, como seu algoz, segundo aquilo do Evangelho (Mt 5, 25): «Para que te não suceda que o teu adversário te entregue ao juiz e que o juiz te entregue ao seu ministro», i. é, ao anjo cruel da pena, como interpreta Crisóstomo. Embora, pois, o diabo retivesse, injustamente e na medida do seu poder, sob o seu jugo o homem enganado pela sua fraude, tanto quanto à culpa como quanto à pena, contudo, era justo que isso o homem o sofresse, por permissão de Deus, quanto à culpa, e pela ordem do mesmo Deus, quanto à pena.
Por onde, relativamente a Deus, a justiça exigia fosse o homem redimido; não porém relativamente ao diabo.

Sexta-feira da II Semana da Quaresma
«José, tomando o corpo, envolveu-o num lençol branco. E depositou-o no seu sepulcro novo» (Mt 27, 59)
I. — Por este sudário designam-se três coisas, em sentido místico:
1. A carne puríssima de Cristo. Feito de linho, que se embranquece com muita pressão, o sudário representa a carne de Cristo, que chega ao alvor da ressurreição pela violência. Conforme o Evangelho: «Cristo devia sofrer e ressuscitar dos mortos» (At 17, 3).
2. A Igreja, que não tenha mancha nem ruga. É o que representa este linho, fiado com diversas linhas.
3. A consciência pura, onde Cristo repousa.
II. — «E depositou-o no seu sepulcro novo» (Mt 27, 59). O texto diz, de início, que o sepulcro não era seu. E é muito conveniente que aquele que morrera pelos pecados dos outros fosse sepultado em um sepulcro alheio.
O texto diz que o sepulcro era «novo», pois se outros corpos tivessem sido depositados aí, não se saberia qual tinha ressuscitado. Outra razão é que, àquele que nasceu de uma virgem intacta, convinha ser sepultado num sepulcro novo; assim como no ventre de Maria não houve ninguém antes ou depois dele, assim também neste sepulcro. Do mesmo modo, para significar ainda que Cristo habita pela fé, escondido na alma renovada: «que Cristo habite pela fé nos vossos corações» (Ef 3, 17)
E S. João acrescenta, «Ora, no lugar em que Jesus foi crucificado, havia um jardim, e no jardim um sepulcro novo.» (Jo 19, 41). É digno de nota que Jesus, capturado num jardim, tenha sofrido sua Paixão e sido sepultado num jardim; como que para significar que, pela virtude da sua Paixão, somos libertados do pecado que Adão, no jardim das delícias, cometeu; e que é por Jesus que a Igreja é consagrada, ela, que é como o Jardim fechado, do Cântico.

16. Thursday after the II Sunday of Lent: The Passion of Christ Was Accomplished as a Sacrifice
Thursday of the II Week of Lent
I. — A sacrifice, in the proper sense, is that which is made as an honor properly due to God, with the aim of appeasing Him. And for this reason, Augustine says: "Every work done with the aim of uniting us with God in a holy fellowship is truly a sacrifice; that is, a work referred to the good end, whose possession is capable of giving us true happiness.” Now, Christ offered Himself to suffer for us; and the very fact that He voluntarily endured His Passion was exceedingly accepted by God, as it stemmed from the utmost charity. Thus, it is evident that the Passion of Christ was a true sacrifice.
And as Augustine further adds in the same book, "the primitive sacrifices of the saints were varied and numerous signs of that true sacrifice. This unique sacrifice was symbolized by many sacrifices, just as the same reality is designated by numerous words, in order for it to be greatly recommended, without any useless embellishment." But Augustine continues, "We consider four elements in a sacrifice: the one to whom it is offered, who offers it, what is offered, and by whom it is offered. Thus, the same, the only unique and true mediator, reconciling us with God by the sacrifice of peace, had to remain one with the one to whom he offered that sacrifice, bring together in Himself, in a unity, those for whom He offered it, and be simultaneously and identically the offerer and the offering."
II. — It is true that in the sacrifices of the old law, which were a figure of Christ, human flesh was never offered; but this does not imply that the Passion was not a sacrifice. For, although the reality corresponds to the figure in a certain way, it does not correspond totally, since the truth must necessarily surpass the figure. Therefore, and suitably, the figure of this sacrifice, by which the flesh of Christ is offered for us, was the flesh, not of men, but of irrational animals that signified the flesh and Christ. The flesh of Christ is the most perfect of sacrifices for the following reasons:
1) Because, being flesh of human nature, it is suitably offered by men, who take it in the form of a sacrament.
2) Because, being capable of suffering and mortal, it was apt for immolation.
3) Because, being free from sin, it had the efficacy to purify from sins.
4) Because, being the very flesh of the offerer, it was accepted by God because of the charity with which it was offered.
Hence Augustine says: "What offering could men take that would be more suited to them than human flesh? What could be more apt for immolation than mortal flesh? What could be purer to cleanse the vices of mortals than flesh born without the contagion of carnal concupiscence, from a virgin womb? What could be offered and accepted with more grace than the flesh of our sacrifice, made the body of our Priest?"

Quinta-feira da II Semana da Quaresma
I. — Chama-se sacrifício em sentido próprio o que é feito como uma honra propriamente devida a Deus, com o fim de o aplacar. E por isso diz Agostinho: «É verdadeiramente sacrifício toda obra feita com o fim de nos unirmos com Deus numa sociedade santa, isto é, uma obra referida ao fim bom, cuja posse é capaz de nos dar verdadeiramente a felicidade.» Ora, Cristo se ofereceu a si mesmo para sofrer por nós; e o próprio fato de ter padecido voluntariamente a sua Paixão foi sobremaneira aceito de Deus, como proveniente de uma caridade máxima. Por onde é manifesto que a Paixão de Cristo foi um verdadeiro sacrifício.
E como Agostinho acrescenta a seguir, no mesmo livro, «os sacrifícios primitivos dos santos foram sinais variados e múltiplos desse verdadeiro sacrifício. Esse sacrifício único foi simbolizado por numerosos sacrifícios, do mesmo modo que uma mesma realidade é designada por numerosas palavras, a fim de que fosse grandemente recomendado, sem nenhum inútil encarecimento.» Mas, continua Agostinho,«consideramos quatro elementos num sacrifício: aquele a quem o oferecemos, quem o oferece, o que é oferecido e por quem o é. Assim, o mesmo, só único e verdadeiro mediador, reconciliando-nos com Deus pelo sacrifício da paz, devia permanecer uno com aquele a quem oferecia esse sacrifício, reunir em si, numa unidade, aqueles por quem o oferecia, e ser simultânea e identicamente o oferente e a oferenda».
II. — É verdade que nos sacrifícios da lei antiga, que eram figura de Cristo, nunca se oferecia carne humana; mas disso não segue que a Paixão não tenha sido um sacrifício. Pois, embora a realidade corresponda à figura de certo modo, não corresponde totalmente, pois a verdade há de necessariamente ultrapassar a figura. Por isso e convenientemente a figura deste sacrifício, pelo qual a carne de Cristo é oferecida por nós, foi a carne, não dos homens, mas de animais irracionais que significavam a carne e Cristo. A carne de Cristo é o perfeitíssimo dos sacrifícios pelas razões seguintes:
1) porque, sendo carne de natureza humana, é convenientemente oferecida pelos homens, que a tomam sob a forma de sacramento.
2) porque, sendo passível e mortal, era apta para a imolação.
3) porque, sendo isenta de pecado, tinha a eficiência para purificar dos pecados.
4) porque, sendo a carne mesma do oferente, era aceita de Deus por causa da caridade com que a oferecia.
Donde o dizer Agostinho: «Que oferenda podiam os homens tomar, que lhes fosse mais adaptada, que uma carne humana? Que de mais apto à imolação do que uma carne mortal? Que haveria de mais puro para delir os vícios dos mortais que uma carne nascida sem o contágio da concupiscência carnal, de um ventre e de um ventre virginal? Que poderia ser oferecido e aceito com mais graça que a carne de nosso sacrifício, tornado o corpo de nosso Sacerdote?»
