Monday of the First Week of the Passion
For all the evils that we incur through sin, we find a remedy in the Passion of Christ. We incur five evils through sin:
The first is the very stain of sin. When a man sins, he defiles his soul, because, just as virtue beautifies, sin mars it. It is written in Baruch: "Why are you, O Israel, in the land of your enemies, and are defiled with the dead?" (Bar 3:10).
But the Passion of Christ washed away this stain. Christ, in His Passion, made His blood a bath to wash sinners in: "He washed them from their sins in His blood" (Rev 1:5). In Baptism, the soul is washed in the Blood of Christ, which receives the regenerative power from the Blood of Christ. Therefore, when someone baptized becomes tarnished by sin, he commits an offense against Christ, and his sin is greater than that committed before baptism. It is written in the Letter to the Hebrews: "Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses" (Heb 10:28-29). How much more does he not deserve greater punishments who has trampled the Son of God and considered the blood of the covenant a common thing?
The second evil we incur through sin is becoming an object of God's aversion. Just as the carnal person loves the beauty of the flesh, so God loves spiritual beauty, which is the beauty of the soul. Therefore, when the soul allows itself to be contaminated by the evil of sin, God is offended and hates the sinner. It is written in the Book of Wisdom: "God hates the wicked and his wickedness" (Wis 14:9). But the Passion of Christ removes these things because it satisfied the Father who was offended by sin, which satisfaction could not come from man. The charity and obedience of Christ were greater than the sin and disobedience of the first man.
The third evil is weakness. When a man sins for the first time, he thinks he can abstain from sin afterward. However, the opposite happens: he weakens through the first sin and becomes more inclined to sin. Sin increasingly dominates the man, and he puts himself in such a state that he can no longer rise. It is like someone who has thrown himself into a well. He can only get out by divine power. After man sinned, our nature became weakened, corrupted, and, for that reason, he became more inclined to sin.
But Christ has diminished this weakness and frailty, even if He has not completely eradicated them.
Man was strengthened by the Passion of Christ, and sin, weakened, will no longer dominate him. For this reason, assisted by divine grace, which is conferred through the sacraments whose effectiveness comes from the Passion of Christ, he can strive to emerge from sin. It is written in St. Paul: "Our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with" (Rom 6:6). Before the Passion of Christ, there were few without mortal sin. But afterward, many have lived and still live without mortal sin.
The fourth evil is the obligation we have to fulfill the penalty for sin. God's justice requires that sin be punished, and the penalty is measured by the guilt. Since the guilt of sin is infinite, as it goes against the infinite good, God, whose command the sinner has despised, the penalty due for mortal sin is also infinite.
But Christ has delivered us from this penalty through His Passion, taking it upon Himself. St. Peter confirms this: "Who Himself bore our sins (i.e., the penalty of sin) in His own body" (1 Pet 2:24).
The virtue of the Passion of Christ was so abundant that it was sufficient to atone for all the sins of all men, even if they numbered in the millions. This is why one who is baptized is also purified from all sins. It is also for this reason that priests forgive sins. Likewise, the one whose suffering most resembles that of the Passion of Christ obtains greater forgiveness and deserves greater graces.
The fifth evil incurred through sin is that we have become exiled from the kingdom of heaven. It is natural that those who offend the king are obliged to leave the homeland. Man was removed from paradise because of sin: Adam was expelled from paradise immediately after sin, and his gate was locked. But Christ, through His Passion, opened that door and again called the exiles back to the kingdom. When the side of Christ was opened, the door of paradise was also opened; when His Blood was shed, the stain was erased, God was appeased, weakness was removed, the penalty was expiated, and the exiles were summoned to the kingdom. This is why it was said immediately to the thief: "You will be with Me today in Paradise" (Luke 23:43). Notice that at that moment it was not said—formerly; nor was it said to anyone else—neither to Adam, nor to Abraham, nor to David; it was said, today, that is, as soon as the door was opened, and the thief asked and received forgiveness. It is written in the Letter to the Hebrews: "Having confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus" (Heb 10:19). Thus, it is clarified how the Passion of Christ was useful as a remedy against sin.

Segunda-Feira da I semana da Paixão
A todos os males que contraímos pelo pecado, encontramos remédio na Paixão de Cristo. Contraímos pelo pecado cinco males:
O primeiro, é a própria mancha do pecado. Quando um homem peca, conspurca a sua alma, porque, como a virtude embeleza, o pecado a enfeia. Lê-se em Barruch: "Por que estás, ó Israel, na terra dos inimigos, e te contaminaste com os mortos?" (Br 3, 10).
Mas a Paixão de Cristo lavou esta mancha. Cristo, na sua Paixão, fez do seu sangue um banho para nele lavar os pecadores: "Lava-os do pecado no sangue" (Ap 1, 5). No Batismo a alma é lavada no Sangue de Cristo, por que este recebe do Sangue de Cristo a força regeneradora. Por isso, quando alguém batizado se macula pelo pecado, faz uma injúria a Cristo e o seu pecado é maior que o cometido antes do batismo. Lê-se na Carta aos Hebreus: "O que desprezou a lei de Moisés, após ouvido o testemunho de dois ou três, deve morrer" (Heb 10, 28-29). Como não deve merecer maiores suplícios, aquele que pisou no Sangue do Filho de Deus e considerou impuro o Sangue da Aliança?
O segundo mal que contraímos pelo pecado é nos tornarmos objeto da aversão de Deus. Assim como quem é carnal ama a beleza da carne, do mesmo modo Deus ama a beleza espiritual, que é a beleza da alma. Quando, por conseguinte, a alma se deixa contaminar pelo mal do pecado, Deus fica ofendido e odeia o pecador. Lê-se no Livro da Sabedoria: "Deus odeia o ímpio e a sua impiedade" (Sb 14, 9). Mas a Paixão de Cristo remove essas coisas, por que ela satisfez ao Pai ofendido pelo pecado, cuja satisfação não poderia vir do homem. A caridade e a obediência de Cristo foram maiores que o pecado e a desobediência do primeiro homem.
O terceiro mal é a fraqueza. O homem, pecando pela primeira vez, pensa que depois pode abster-se do pecado. Acontece, porém, o contrário: debilita-se pelo primeiro pecado e fica inclinado a pecar mais. O pecado vai dominando cada vez mais o homem, e este, por si mesmo, coloca-se em tal estado que não pode mais se levantar. É como alguém que se lançou num poço. Só pode sair dele pela força divina. Depois que o homem pecou, a nossa natureza ficou debilitada, corrompida, e, por isso mesmo, ficou ele mais inclinado para o pecado.
Mas Cristo diminuiu essa fraqueza e debilidade, bem que não as tenha totalmente apagado.
O homem foi fortalecido pela Paixão de Cristo e o pecado, enfraquecido, de sorte que este não mais o dominará. Pode, por esse motivo, auxiliado pela graça divina, que é conferida pelos sacramentos cuja eficácia recebem da Paixão de Cristo, esforçar-se para sair do pecado. Lê-se em S. Paulo: "O nosso velho homem foi crucificado juntamente com Ele, para que fosse destruído o corpo do pecado" (Rm 6, 6). Antes da Paixão de Cristo, poucos havia sem pecado mortal. Mas, depois dela, muitos viveram e vivem sem pecado mortal.
O quarto mal é a obrigação que temos de cumprir a pena do pecado. A justiça de Deus exige que o pecado seja punido, e a pena é medida pela culpa. Como a culpa do pecado é infinita, porque ela vai contra o bem infinito, Deus, cujo mandamento o pecador desprezou, também a pena devida ao pecado mortal é infinita.
Mas Cristo pela sua Paixão livrou-nos dessa pena, assumindo-a Ele próprio. Confirma-o S. Pedro: "Os nossos pecados (i. é., a pena do pecado) Ele carregou no seu corpo" (1 Pd 2, 24).
Foi de tal modo exuberante a virtude da Paixão de Cristo, que ela só foi suficiente para expirar todos os pecados de todos os homens, mesmo que fossem em número de milhões. Eis o motivo pelo qual aquele que foi batizado, foi também purificado de todos os pecados. É também por este motivo que os sacerdotes perdoam os pecados. Do mesmo modo, aquele cujo sofrimento mais se assemelha ao da Paixão de Cristo, consegue um maior perdão e merece maiores graças.
O quinto mal contraído pelo pecado foi nos termos tornados exilados do reino do céu. É natural que aqueles que ofendem o rei sejam obrigados a sair da pátria. O homem foi afastado do paraíso por causa do pecado: Adão imediatamente após o pecado foi expulso do paraíso, e sua porta lhe foi trancada. Mas Cristo, pela sua Paixão, abriu aquela porta e novamente chamou os exilados para o reino. Quando foi aberto o lado de Cristo, foi também a porta do paraíso aberta; quando o seu Sangue foi derramado, a mancha foi apagada, Deus foi aplacado, a fraqueza foi afastada, a pena foi expiada, e os exilados foram convocados para o reino. Por isso é que foi logo dito ao ladrão: "Estarás hoje comigo no Paraíso" (Lc. 23, 43). Observe-se que nesse momento não foi dito — outrora; que também não foi dito a outrem — nem a Adão, nem a Abraão, nem a David; foi dito, hoje, isto é, logo que a porta foi aberta, e o ladrão pediu e recebeu perdão. Lê-se na carta aos Hebreus: "Confiantes na entrada no santuário pelo Sangue de Cristo" (Heb. 10, 19). Fica assim esclarecido como a Paixão de Cristo foi útil, enquanto remédio contra o pecado.

33. First Sunday of the Passion: The Passion of Christ
First Sunday of the Passion
"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should have eternal life." (John 3:14-15)
Here there are three things we should consider:
1. The figure of the Passion: "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness." To the Jewish people, who said, "Our soul loathes this worthless bread" (Num 21:5), God sent serpents as a punishment. Then He commanded them to make a bronze serpent as a remedy against the serpents and in figure of the Passion. It is characteristic of a serpent to have venom, but the bronze serpent was not poisonous. Similarly, Christ had no sin, which is a poison, but He resembled the sinner, according to this word of Saint Paul: "God sent His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh" (Rom 8:3). Therefore, Christ produced the effect of the bronze serpent against the onslaught of burning desires.
2. The manner of the Passion: "It is necessary that the Son of Man be lifted up," which is understood from the lifting up of the cross. Christ wanted to die lifted up:
a) To purify heaven. By the holiness of His life, He had already purified the earth; it remained to purify the air.
b) To triumph over the demon, who prepares war in the air.
c) To draw our hearts to Himself: "And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to Myself" (John 12:32).
By dying on the Cross, He was exalted, for He triumphed over His enemies, to the point that His death is called exaltation. The Psalm says: "He shall drink from the brook by the way; therefore, He shall lift up the head" (Ps 109).
And it was the cross that was the cause of His exaltation, as Saint Paul says: "He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him" (Phil 2:8).
3. The fruit of the Passion. The fruit is eternal life. Therefore it says: that whoever believes in Him and does good works shall not perish but have eternal life." This fruit corresponds to the figurative fruit of the bronze serpent. Indeed, whoever turned to it was healed of the poison and saved his life. One turns to the Son of Man exalted on the cross who believes in Christ crucified and, thus, being healed of the poison and sin, preserves himself for eternal life.

Primeiro domingo da Paixão
«E como Moisés levantou no deserto a serpente, assim também importa que seja levantado o Filho do homem, a fim de que todo o que crê nele tenha a vida eterna.» (Jo 3, 14-15)
Aqui há três coisas que devemos considerar:
1. A figura da Paixão: "E como Moisés levantou no deserto a serpente". Ao povo judeu, que dizia: "a nossa alma está enfastiada deste alimento levíssimo" (Nm 21, 5), Deus, para lhes castigar, enviou serpentes. Em seguida, ordenou que fizessem uma serpente de bronze como remédio contra as serpentes e em figura da Paixão. É próprio da serpente possuir veneno, mas a serpente de bronze não era venenosa. Do mesmo modo, Cristo não tinha pecado, que é um veneno, mas assemelhou-se ao pecador, conforme esta palavra de são Paulo: "enviou Deus seu Filho em carne semelhante à do pecado" (Rm 8, 3). Por isso, Cristo produziu o efeito da serpente de bronze contra o ímpeto das concupiscências abrasadas.
2. O modo da Paixão: "importa que seja levantado o Filho do homem", o que se compreende do levantamento da cruz. Cristo quis morrer levantado:
a) Para purificar o céu. Pela santidade da sua vida, purificara já a terra, restava purificar o ar.
b) Para triunfar sobre o demônio, que prepara a guerra nos ares.
c) Para atrair nossos corações a si: "Eu, quando for levantado da terra, atrairei todos a mim" (Jo 12, 32).
Ao morrer na Cruz, foi exaltado, pois triunfou de seus inimigos, a ponto de sua morte ser chamada exaltação. Diz o Salmo: "Beberá da torrente no caminho, por isso levantará a sua cabeça" (Sl 109).
E foi a cruz a causa de sua exaltação, como diz são Paulo: "Humilhou-se a si mesmo, feito obediente até à morte, e morte de cruz. Por isso também Deus o exaltou" (Fl 2, 8)
3. O fruto da Paixão. O fruto é a vida eterna. Por isso diz: a fim de que todo o que crê nele, e faça boas boas, não pereça, mas tenha a vida eterna". Este fruto corresponde ao fruto figurado da serpente de bronze. Com efeito, quem se voltasse para ela, curava-se do veneno e salvava sua vida. Volta-se para o Filho do Homem exaltado na cruz quem crê em Cristo crucificado e, assim, curando-se do veneno e do pecado, conserva-se para a vida eterna.

Sábado depois do IV Domingo da Quaresma
Tanto um meio é mais conveniente para conseguir um fim, quanto mais ele faz concorrerem elementos conducentes ao fim. Ora, o ser o homem liberado pela paixão de Cristo foi causa de concorrerem muitos elementos conducentes à salvação do mesmo, além da liberação do pecado.
1. Assim, primeiro, desse modo o homem conhece quanto Deus o ama; o que o excita a amá-lo mais, e nisso consiste a perfeição da salvação humana. Donde o dizer o Apóstolo: "Deus faz brilhar a sua caridade em nós, porque ainda quando éramos pecadores, morreu Cristo por nós" (Rm 5, 8).
2. Segundo, porque por esse meio nos deu o exemplo da obediência, da humildade, da constância, da justiça e das demais virtudes, reveladas na paixão de Cristo e que são necessárias à salvação humana. Por isso diz a Escritura (1 Pd 2, 21): "Cristo padeceu por nós, deixando-vos exemplo para que sigais as suas pisadas".
3. Terceiro, porque Cristo, com sua paixão, não somente liberou o homem do pecado, mas ainda lhe mereceu a graça justificante e a glória da beatitude.
4. Quarto, porque, assim, uma necessidade maior impôs ao homem conservar-se imune do pecado, segundo aquilo do Apóstolo (1 Cor 6, 20): "Porque vós fostes comprado por um grande preço; glorificai, pois, e trazei a Deus no vosso corpo".
5. Quinto, porque contribuiu para maior dignidade do homem, de modo que assim como fora vencido e enganado pelo diabo, assim também fosse ele mesmo quem vencesse o diabo; e assim como o homem mereceu a morte, assim também, morrendo, a vencesse a ela, conforme o dizer do Apóstolo (1 Cor 15, 57): "Graças a Deus, que nos deu a vitória, por Jesus Cristo".
Por isso foi mais conveniente que, pela paixão de Cristo fossemos liberados, do que pela só vontade de Deus.

32. Saturday after the IV Sunday of Lent: The Most Convenient Way for the Liberation of Humankind
Saturday after the IV Sunday of Lent
A means is more convenient for achieving an end to the extent that it brings together elements conducive to that end. Now, the fact that man is liberated by the Passion of Christ was the cause of many elements conducive to his salvation, in addition to the liberation from sin.
1. Thus, first, in this way man knows how much God loves him; this excites him to love Him more, and in this consists the perfection of human salvation. Hence the Apostle says: "God shows his love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
2. Second, because through this means He gave us the example of obedience, humility, constancy, justice, and the other virtues revealed in the Passion of Christ, which are necessary for human salvation. Therefore, Scripture says (1 Peter 2:21): "For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps."
3. Third, because Christ, with His Passion, not only freed man from sin, but also earned him the justifying grace and the glory of beatitude.
4. Fourth, because this imposed a greater necessity on man to remain immune from sin, according to what the Apostle says (1 Corinthians 6:20): "For you were bought with a price; so glorify God in your body."
5. Fifth, because it contributed to the greater dignity of man, so that just as he had been overcome and deceived by the devil, he would also be the one to defeat the devil; and just as man earned death, so also, by dying, he should conquer it, according to what the Apostle says (1 Corinthians 15:57): "But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Therefore, it was more convenient for us to be liberated by the Passion of Christ than by the mere will of God.
