Elon Musk's Plan for Americans' Sensitive Data Has Security Experts Terrified Elon Musk's ever-alarming Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) now wants to consolidate the federal government's vast data reserves. They're currently siloed across government agencies, and DOGE wants to merge them into a sprawling centralized database. Unsurprisingly, security experts told The Washington Post that's a terrible idea. originally posted at

Ooh Look, a New Google Logo! Google doesn’t update its logos very often, but at the 10-year mark of a design, we have seen them switch things up. For example, Google Play saw a logo refresh when it reached 10 years old, and now, just 10 years removed from the most recent Google logo redesign, we’re getting a bit of a refresh. originally posted at

New Research Challenges 160-Year-Old Long-Standing Origin of Life Theory A discovery by scientists at Scripps Research and the Georgia Institute of Technology could shed light on the evolution of life on Earth and pave the way for more efficient biofuel production. Early Earth was a volatile and inhospitable place, marked by extreme temperatures, widespread volcanic activity, and a thin, primitive atmosphere. Yet somehow, the basic molecular components of life, such as sugars, amino acids, and nucleotides, emerged from this chaos. One long-standing theory among chemists holds that ribose, a sugar that forms the structural backbone of RNA, arose spontaneously through a chemical process. However, new research challenges this idea. originally posted at

Malicious npm Packages Infect 3,200+ Cursor Users With Backdoor Cybersecurity researchers have flagged three malicious npm packages that are designed to target the Apple macOS version of Cursor, a popular artificial intelligence (AI)-powered source code editor. "Disguised as developer tools offering 'the cheapest Cursor API,' these packages steal user credentials, fetch an encrypted payload from threat actor-controlled infrastructure, overwrite Cursor's main.js file, and disable auto-updates to maintain persistence," Socket researcher Kirill Boychenko said. originally posted at

Soviet-Era spacecraft crashes back to Earth after 53 years A Soviet-era spacecraft plunged to Earth on Saturday, more than a half-century after its failed launch to Venus. The European Union Space Surveillance and Tracking confirmed its uncontrolled reentry, based on analysis and no-shows of the spacecraft on subsequent orbits. The European Space Agency’s space debris office also indicated that the spacecraft had reentered after it failed to appear over a German radar station. originally posted at

World's largest atom smasher turned lead into gold — and destroyed it instantly Medieval alchemists were obsessed with the idea of turning lead into gold, a concept known as chrysopoeia. But they may have had more luck swapping out the philosopher's stone for a particle accelerator, new results suggest. originally posted at

Scientists say they may have found the missing half of the universe For decades, scientists knew something didn’t add up. The amount of ordinary matter—the kind that forms stars, planets, and people—didn’t match what Big Bang models predicted. Now, researchers at UC Berkeley believe they’ve finally found the missing pieces. originally posted at

AI and Programming: The Beginning of a New Era Our AI Codecon conference kicked off today with Coding with AI: The End of Software Development as We Know It. Here are my opening remarks introducing the series’ themes. You can reserve your seat for upcoming AI Codecon events here. Thanks so much for joining us today. We have over 20,000 people signed up for this event, both subscribers on the O’Reilly learning platform and those who aren’t yet subscribers. I think you’re here because you all sense what I do: We’re witnessing not the end of programming but its remarkable expansion. This is the most exciting moment in software development that I’ve seen during my more than 40 years in this industry. originally posted at

Microsoft Confirms Critical 10/10 Cloud Security Vulnerability https://www.forbes.com/sites/daveywinder/2025/05/09/microsoft-confirms-critical-1010-cloud-security-vulnerability/ It’s not often that a truly critical security vulnerability emerges that hits the maximum Common Vulnerability Scoring System severity rating of 10. This is one of those times. Microsoft has confirmed multiple vulnerabilities rated as critical and impacting core cloud services, one of which has reached the unwelcome heights of that 10/10 criticality rating. The good news is that none are known to have been exploited in the wild, none have already been publicly disclosed, and as a user, there’s nothing you need to do to protect your environment. originally posted at

Scientists propose new theory of gravity unifying quantum physics and relativity https://eladelantado.com/news/finnish-gravity-theory/ Gravity is everywhere: pulling at your feet, holding satellites in orbit, and making the Earth spin around the sun. Yet, for all its familiarity, gravity remains one of physics’ most persistent mysteries. We know what it does. We don’t really know what it is. originally posted at

Are We Wrong About Black Holes? A Radical Theory Challenges Einstein **Black holes may not have singularities after all!** Scientists are exploring new models — including ones without event horizons — that challenge classical physics. With next-gen observations, we might finally glimpse what lies beyond. Einstein, Schwarzschild, and the Birth of Black Holes “Hic sunt leones,” remarks Stefano Liberati, director of the Institute for Fundamental Physics of the Universe (IFPU) and one of authors of a new paper published in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. The Latin phrase, meaning “here be lions,” was once used on ancient maps to mark unknown or dangerous territories. In this case, it refers to the singularity predicted to exist at the center of traditional black holes, those described by Einstein’s general relativity. originally posted at
