Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, died on this day in 918. She was the daughter of Alfred the Great, and ruled Mercia after the death of her husband Æthelred. There is a more modern church built on a site originally founded by her in Shrewsbury.
I’ve just been away for a week in some of the battlefields of Northern Europe. It’s really depressing. I took a picture of the grave of a Canadian soldier who died during the Great War, where one of his relatives had left a note saying that they’d named their son after him.
