The Emperor commanded Bretanion to open the churches to the Arians, but the Bishop said to him, "You have ruined the city and the churches!" When the people heard that they should commune with the Arians, they wished to revolt. The holy man held them back, and said, "Do not fear. I alone will go against the emperor, and I will not let any of you perish."

After serving for only 3 years, feeling unworthy of the metropolitan seat, he resigned, returning to Partoș Monastery where he lived in simplicity until his death.
