I'm upgrading a Dell Vostro 14 laptop. Replaced the extremely slow 1TB hard drive drive with a Samsung EVO 250GB SATA SSD. Doubled the memory from 8GB to 16GB by adding an additional 8GB memory module in the empty slot, so now it will benefit from dual-channel memory, too. #hardware #upgrades #laptop

Messing around with repurposing a 1U rack mount appliance. I took the original motherboard out of it and am now testing a Intel Ivy Bridge ITX motherboard with dual ethernet. If all does well, this will become my replacement pfSense router to be installed in server rack instead of the old Dell Optiplex I have on a shelf right now. I have a few challenges, such as getting a CPU cooler that fits in the 1U tall case. I found a low power Intel i3-3220T 35W TDP processor and tested to make sure that works in it. I have two 2GB 10600 memory modules. Anyone know if the 12800L (low power) modules really consume a noticeable amount less power? I probably have some 12800L modules around here somewhere, so may end up putting those in anyway. #pfsense #rack #hardware #efficiency

Good morning! Back to it. Lots of tech problems to figure out and broken computers to repair.

I'm considering this case because it has the power buttons and USB ports on the front (a request from my customer, as he doesn't like the USB ports on the top of the case, which most are now). I have not seen a power supply mounted at the front of the case like this. Have you built in a case like this? Any downside to having the power cable routed to the front? I kind of want to get it just to see how well it works. Case model: GAMEMAX MeshBox PRO ATX Chassis-Black #atx #computer #tech image

Good morning. Had some good discussion and conversation with my family this morning. I value having a flexible schedule due to owning a business. Yes, there can be a lot of work, but I decide when to do it. Which means I can start later if I want to and do not have a commute every day. ( I did stay out in my workshop until after midnight yesterday, though )

Glad to have completed some upgrades on my ThinkStation S30. I now have an nvme SSD as my boot drive, thanks to the Clover boot loader. Also happy to have the Xeon E5-2690 back with its sixteen threads at 3.8 GHz. Upgraded from 16GB to 64GB memory. I am ready to put this machine to work! image #devuan #linux #lenovo

I should at least give Rescuezilla a try sometime. I use CloneZilla all the time and that works for most of what I want to do. Would be good to know what features and ease of use Rescuezilla has compared to CloneZilla. #clonezilla #linux View quoted note →

I just recovered data from a Lenovo IdeaPad laptop that suffered damaged from a water spill. The owner may also want to have the laptop repaired. I looked up replacement motherboards and they are available. If replacing the motherboard, I recommend upgrading from the original Intel i3 to a replacement motherboard that has the Intel i5. It is only a bit more for cost and likely well worth it. #recovery #repair #lenovo

My sons and I have been doing some 3D printing. Simple things, yet useful, for now. #3Dprinting
