Successfully upgraded a Dell Optiplex 3010 to a Xeon e3-1225 v2 processor, replacing the i5-3450 that was originally in the computer. Also was able to replace the memory with ECC memory (PC3L-12800E) - Registered memory won't work, though. https://video.retroedge.tech/w/7m5tHDCnYkKtjfBZvEy6GR #peertube #retroedge #dell #xeon

If you do not like what a company is doing... don't continue buying products and services from them. Use your money (life force) to support what you want more of and slow the flow of resources to what you see as being harmful. #cashfriday

I am upgrading a ThinkPad T560 laptop to 16GB memory - two modules of 8GB PC3L-12800s Also had to turn off "Fast Boot" in Windows 11 to make sure the keyboard works properly from a cold boot. This laptop is reserved for a customer who plans to get it next week. #thinkpad #t560

I am attempting to tighten the screen hinges on a Dell Latitude 7490 laptop. I need to find a tiny pliers... or further disassemble to get better access to the hinge nut. I'd rather not have to further disassemble. #dell #latitude

I am okay with disk encryption if the owner of the device enables it themselves and understands at least a little bit about it. Microsoft enabling it on people's computers without their knowledge is really scummy. I have full disk encryption on my ThinkPad laptop with Linux and I'm okay with that... because I set it up and I know about it. #microsoft #encryption #linux #thinkpad

Today I will be attempting a data recovery from a Dell XPS laptop that was dropped and no longer has proper display output to the laptop screen. To anyone thinking about getting an Dell XPS, I recommend that you don't. The extra cost premium is not worth what you actually get as I think Dell makes a lot of poor design decisions with the XPS line that look "premium" but are really problematic. That's my opinion on the XPS series. The Latitude line is much more reliable, if you want to go with a laptop from Dell. #dell #xps #datarecovery

The power adapter did not work with either USB-C jack. My power adapter, for testing, did not work on the primary power port, but did work on the secondary USB-C port. I think this is because of the firmware issue that made charging ports burn out on Intel ThinkPad laptops. I will be updating the firmware, but won't bring the charging back to the primary port. That port is not physically busted as it still works to connect USB devices, such as a USB ethernet adapter. #thinkpad View quoted note →

Today I will be cleaning and testing a ThinkPad T490s laptop. The owner thinks the DC jack may be broken, but I am not sure yet that is the problem. I will try with another power adapter to check to see if the charger is the problem. This T490s is not the normal flat black color, but a steel grey color. #thinkpad

I had a need to upload a video. A requirement was that the file size be 20MB or less. The video I took was 50MB. I used this ffmpeg command to keep the same video content and duration, but reduce the file size to about 18MB. Perfect! ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -preset medium -movflags +faststart -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4 #ffmpeg #linux #video

Due to the recent development with the #x11Libre fork, X11 has a chance of working well for a long time to come. View quoted note →

I replaced the motherboard on a HP EliteBook 840 G6 laptop. Success. Upgraded from an Intel i5 to i7, since I found a good price for a motherboard with i7 on ebay. #upgrade #repair #hp #tech

Just migrated a customer's system drive from a Dell Optiplex 780 to a Dell Optiplex 3010. Yes, people are really using systems these old to get work done, as unbelieve as that may seem to Youtube gaming bros chasing the latest release. The 3010 will be a significant upgrade for him He would have kept using the 780 had it not been for the motherboard not recognizing the new CMOS battery. A loud fan was also bothersome. So a number of issues that added up. Updating the BIOS on the 3010 now. This customer is on Windows 10. He has no care about it being out of service, as his main machine up to this point has been another Optiplex 780 with Windows 7. Now that some applications he needs are starting to not work on Windows 7, he'd like to move up to Windows 10. Of course, I think the 3010 is better suited to run Linux or BSD. #tech #dell #optiplex

I ordered two older CPUs - the Intel Xeon E3-1225 v2 - as they should work fine in the Dell Optiplex 3010. I am going to be doing a lot more testing on upgrades and options for this computer. If it takes a Xeon processor, it should also work with ECC memory, which would make it even more server-like. I will be testing that. Of course it will work fine as a server without a Xeon and ECC memory, as I have ProxMox running on a similar machine with an Intel i5 and regular memory and it works fine. #Dell #hardware #tech #linux #retroedge image

This experiment turned out well. My sons are having a great time with Batocera Linux so far. The Dell Optiplex 3010 seems to be a good choice. I also have other plans the Dell Optiplex 3010 "platform". #Linux #RetroEdge View quoted note →
