According to an exclusive report by the Financial Times, Friday’s closed-door meeting at the White House between U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky grew heated, as Trump repeatedly pressed Zelensky to accept Russia’s proposed terms to end the war — including surrendering the entire Donbas region, encompassing both the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts, to Moscow.
Officials familiar with the discussion described it as devolving multiple times into a “shouting match,” with Trump “swearing constantly” and echoing several of the same arguments made to him a day earlier by Russian President Vladimir Putin during their phone call. At one point, Trump reportedly parroted Putin’s description of the conflict as a “special military operation,” rather than a war, warning Zelensky: “If [Putin] wants it, he will destroy you.”
Trump also allegedly told Zelensky that “the Russian economy is doing great,” a remark that officials believe was influenced by his conversation with Putin — directly contradicting Trump’s own recent posts on social media, where he claimed that Russia’s economy was collapsing under sanctions and the prolonged war.
