The USS Gettysburg (CG-64), a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser—best known for accidentally downing an F/A-18F Super Hornet in a blue-on-blue incident last December during operations against the Houthis in Yemen—has arrived in the southern Caribbean on an unscheduled deployment. The ship is joining the naval task force conducting counter–narco-terrorism operations under U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). The Gettysburg now operates alongside the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, several Arleigh Burke–class guided-missile destroyers, and at least one additional Ticonderoga-class cruiser already in the area. They are expected to be joined soon by the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) and the rest of Carrier Strike Group Twelve (CSG-12). image

The Trump Administration has decided to reinstate a rule for credentialed White House reporters that was first implemented—and later withdrawn—under the Clinton Administration in 1993. The rule prohibits members of the White House Press Corps from entering Room 140 of the West Wing, known as the “Upper Press” and located near the Oval Office, without an appointment from either the Press Secretary or the Communications Director. According to the White House, the restriction is linked to the ongoing restructuring of the National Security Council (NSC), noting that members of the Communications Staff are now “routinely handling sensitive material” that must be “protected” from unauthorized access by reporters. Earlier this year, the Pentagon cited similar concerns when it imposed further limitations on access for members of the Pentagon Press Corps. image

According to internal U.S. government documents obtained by The Washington Post, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has reached out to Russia, China, and Iran seeking to bolster his country’s deteriorating military capabilities. The requests include defensive radar systems, aircraft repairs, and potentially missiles. The documents reveal that Caracas sent a letter to Moscow intended for Russian President Vladimir Putin, to be delivered during a visit to the Russian capital by a senior aide earlier this month. A similar letter was reportedly being prepared for Chinese President Xi Jinping, requesting “expanded military cooperation” between the two nations to counter what Maduro described as “escalation between the U.S. and Venezuela.” Additionally, Venezuelan Transport Minister Ramón Celestino Velásquez has coordinated a shipment of military equipment and drones from Iran while planning a visit to Tehran. In communications with an Iranian official, he reportedly said Venezuela required “passive detection equipment,” “GPS scramblers,” and “almost certainly drones with a 1,000 km [600 mile] range.” On Sunday, an Ilyushin Il-76—a Russian aircraft sanctioned by the U.S. in 2023 for its role in arms trafficking and transporting mercenaries—landed in Caracas after taking a circuitous route over Africa to avoid Western airspace, according to flight-tracking data from Flightradar24. image

According to three American and European officials who spoke with CNN, the Pentagon has given the White House the “green light” to supply Ukraine with BGM-109 Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles, which have a range of over 1,000 miles. The decision follows an assessment that the transfer would not adversely affect U.S. munitions stockpiles, leaving the final approval in the hands of President Donald J. Trump. image
