According to a release from the Japanese Joint Staff, the Japanese Air Self Defense Force’s Southwestern Air Defense Force scrambled fighter jets to deal with a suspected aircraft intrusion, likely Chinese PLAAF aircraft, in the East China Sea. In the past year, both Chinese and Russian aircraft and vessels have tested Japan’s airspace, ADIZ, and territorial waters, as Japan has taken a firmer stance on their regional and global defense commitments, support for Taiwan, and increased force readiness in response to Chinese coercive actions. image

After traders grew increasingly optimistic late last week that Iran would soon agree to halt uranium enrichment as part of a broader agreement to end the ongoing Middle East conflict, those expectations appear to have faded following yesterday’s fragile and largely unproductive talks in Switzerland. Market-implied odds that Iran will agree to end enrichment by December 31, 2026, have fallen sharply from approximately 80% to just 33%. image

Earlier today: Reporter: “There was a moment yesterday when Araghchi came into the room and did not greet you. You didn't shake hands, and then he walked out. Did you feel snubbed by that?” Vice President Vance: “No. Trust me, I've spent a lot of time dealing with the Iranians over the last few months. Sometimes I find them extremely confusing as negotiators.”

Trump on Iran: • Trump rejected the suggestion that Iran holds significant leverage, arguing that the country’s military capabilities have been severely degraded. • He said Iran’s navy, air force, air defense network, radar systems, and much of its missile and drone infrastructure have been destroyed. • Trump claimed Iran’s senior leadership has been eliminated, describing the regime’s command structure as heavily weakened. • He criticized The New York Times and other media outlets for reporting that Iran is in a similar position to where it was months ago, calling those reports inaccurate. • Trump argued that public trust in the media has declined due to what he described as biased and misleading coverage. • He asserted that most of Iran’s missile launch capabilities, along with much of its drone and missile production capacity, have been destroyed. • Trump suggested there is reluctance among Iranian officials to assume top leadership positions given the current circumstances. • He contrasted Iran’s condition with that of the United States, claiming the U.S. economy is stronger than ever, with record investment inflows, growing manufacturing, and historically high employment. • Trump concluded by criticizing the reporter’s question, calling it “stupid.”
