My position on censorship is that direct protocols between two people such as P2P 256AES encrypted communication channels should be free from censorship or spyware attempts no matter what information gets exchanged. A public protocol that relies on a relay operator should be subject to some threshold of censorship to stop the promulgation of deprivation that is universally agreed upon and universally condemned. The main difference I feel between these two things is the expectation of privacy in the first example and anonymity vs the expectation of anonymity in the second. I think we need to have a public discussion about what should be censored instead of some corporate or state approach which is just handed to us. We need transparency in our platforms and the kind of ambiguous and sneaky censorship that big tech has engaged in has made many people lose trust in these channels which is unfortunate but speaks to what solution is needed.
