Show HN: RMBG – remove backgrounds from images in the browser (no uploads) I am a person who does editing and digital designing. I used to use this tool, remove.bg, for getting transparent PNGs from either stock images or my own images. It was good, fast, free, and convenient. The only caveats for me were the export resolution limits and a privacy factor, that is, my images got uploaded to their servers. Recently, remove.bg announced that they are shutting down the standalone website and moving to inside Canva only. This really made me sad. I have been using this tool for a long time now. So, I made my own open-source tool, RMBG, which is: 1. Privacy-focused: the images never get uploaded somewhere; they stay and get processed only in your own browser. 2. No watermark or export resolution limits. 3. Fully free and open source with an MIT licence. No sign-in or accounts needed. 4. You can batch process and export as ZIP. 5. You can edit the image after the automated background removal, like erase objects, restore areas, recompute, etc. There are many view modes—mask, split, etc. 6. You can export in PNG, WebP, JPEG, and, in most browsers, AVIF. Other notes: Behind the scenes, it uses the BiRefNet-lite AI model in ONNX through Transformers.js. Inference runs in a worker with WebGPU where available and a single-threaded WASM fallback. The first visit downloads the runtime and about 98 MB of model weights from CDNs (that's why the first visit might be slower); later visits usually reuse the browser cache, so it can be fast. There is minimal analytics, using only GoatCounter for small events such as page visits, successful inferences, and quality feedback. No image pixels, filenames, or dimensions are collected. I am looking for contributors and as much help and support as possible, so I would appreciate people trying it out and giving feedback. Any ideas, PRs, and issues will be greatly appreciated. I will be active on HN and will reply to comments here. Hope to see some support here! Links: 1. Website - 2. Source code on GitHub - 3. GoatCounter public analytics dashboard - 4. Show HN: Datachef - full-stack data platform Hi HN, I’m Joe. I’m a data engineer, and I built Datachef because I got tired of maintaining the disjointed data stack (Fivetran, Airbyte, Airflow, Snowflake, Redshift, S3, dbt, Looker, Tableau, a reverse-ETL tool, etc.) and being a middleman for business users that just wanted to self serve. Datachef is one managed platform where you can: - Connect your business systems (Salesforce, Marketo, Hubspot, etc.) and/or databases (Postgres, MySQL) in a few clicks. Your data lake is synced in minutes. - Explore your data via natural language or write SQL directly. - Model how data is combined, filtered and aggregated. Create a shared system of intelligence. - Share models across the org so every query, report and slide deck tells the same story. - Integrate data back into Salesforce, Marketo and HubSpot — lead scores, segments and events, in the systems your team already works in. We shipped a Claude connector (blog/datachef-claude-connector). From Claude you can run complex, multi-step/multi-dataset analysis, and create or update your models and sync settings. I’d love feedback, especially from anyone who has run the modern data stack and has opinions on what consolidating it should and shouldn’t give up. Show HN: I told people I'm a convicted felon after 20 years of hiding it Hi there. I was engineer number 3 at Eventbrite and founding engineer at Reforge. I've created a dozen or so startups myself and have worked in many others, like Instacart. All this time, no one knew that I was a convicted felon. It wasn't exactly a topic that came up, but it was certainly something that I never brought up. When you're a convicted felon, people look at you as if you are tainted. I was unable to rent apartments in San Francisco. I was unable to get a job directly after being released from prison. It's funny because when you owe the state $17,000 in restitution and you can't get a job, people become extremely desperate. And that desperation can easily put you right back into prison. So I went from homeless person at age 19 to 7-figures about 10 years later. I retired at age 38. What I'm doing now is writing an autobiography. The main theme of it is hope. And I want to make sure that people know about it. They don't necessarily have to be interested in it, but if people know about what it's like sleeping in a car believing that one day you will travel the world and then actually doing it, then I think I've accomplished my task in writing this book. If you're interested, please let me know. Comments URL: Points: 3 # Comments: 0 #convictedfelon #sanfrancisco #reforge #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Show HN: Pawmc a.k.a. talking diary, an LLM chat with compartmentalised memory What pawmc is (from the blog post): It’s an LLM chat app with minimal system prompt and no tools/web-search by design. It stores most important context across your conversations in isolated buckets, called “diaries” and “topics”. This means that when you start a conversation in { diary: personal, topic: books }, the AI receives your first message along with summaries of that diary and that topic. It’s close in concept to Karpathy’s LLM Wiki, but simpler, easier to wrap your head around and maintain — no extra tooling and no different types of documents: it’s just your conversations as the source of truth and the summaries of topics and diaries as the “wiki” Post links a hosted demo with a scripted walkthrough of a typical flow, no LLM. And here is the repo: Comments URL: Points: 1 # Comments: 0 #llmchat #llmwiki #pawmc #diary #post #karpathy #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Show HN: Global Compute, you pick. One API Hi HN, I’m Anil. I wanted to test the waters for a cloud computing site I created. It connects developers with access to the global compute using a unified API. It’s like a compute Marketplace. You state what you need (region, price point, performance target) and deploy the same way, no matter which provider is underneath. I also benchmark every server and publish the results alongside per-second pricing. Stack: The nodes that get created are basically Cloud Hypervisor VMMs on Ubuntu. I used Linux networking (VXLAN/NAT) to do all of the VPC and IP configs. Disclaimer: This is early and the provider pool is small — mainly in Fremont, California (HE.net), and no other formal provider partnerships yet; I buy capacity the same way anyone would. That’s why some systems are reservable rather than instantly deployable. Hoping for some feedback! I am very receptive to evolving this whole idea. ps: There’s also $20 free compute credit for new users, if you want to poke at it. Show HN: TUI to manage firewall and HTTP server, in Rust I have been self-hosting for 10 years, and "family hosting" for 2. The number of attacks my servers get has increased by 3x since May of this year. Now personally, I don't like hiding behind Cloudflare because I don't want them to be a SPOF, but it was becoming a bit too scary to just be open to the web. Because it is a family cloud, it can't hide behind a VPN, it has to support devices like TV sticks that can't connect properly over VPN. It has to support HTTPS. So I put together a Rust/Ratatui TUI+cron/CLI that manages my second line of defense: firewall and HTTP server. I run a reverse Nginx proxy in front of apps like Nextcloud, and a nftables firewall with SSH as my admin tunnel. It does several things: 1) It allows me to block entire segments, countries, datacenter IP ranges, TOR exit nodes etc... 2) It allows me to block specific bots: search bots, AI bots, security scanners 3) It does dynamic blocking too, looking at the logs to spot bad behavior and block it. I used to run fail2ban for SSH for example, but a centralized UI for both SSH and HTTP(S) is nicer IMHO. So if this is useful to anyone else, feel free. It's AGPL v3. In my experience, geoblocking is the biggest win, reducing the attacks by 30x. AI Disclosure: I use AI assisted development. I follow Linus Torvalds and Bob Martin model, with using AI as a tool and verifying the result. Show HN: Self-hosted Omnivore-fully self-hosted, open-source Read-it-Later app Many of you might be familiar with Omnivore. It was a cloud-hosted Read it Later app that later shutdown due to the owners going to work for ElevenLabs. If you are familiar with it, you'll know that it was a pretty feature-filled reader that became an essential part of peoples reading / articling habit. Shortly before the shutdown I was tasked with ensuring that Omnivore could live on as a self-hosted application. By the time the Omnivore application shut down there was a fully-self hostable version available. I didn't do much to advertise this at the time. We had a pretty sturdy community on Discord and those who needed that information found it. I wanted to advertise it now because I have made a few changes to the setup, and I figured it might be a nice time for people to jump in. I've included a link in the URL with a bunch of screenshots and feature outlines. Comments URL: Points: 4 # Comments: 0 #omnivore #app #laterapp #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit
