Here’s something many Albertans don’t realize: Alberta already manages its own healthcare system. Our province administers our hospitals, clinics, and health services. What we don’t fully control is the funding. Currently, billions of Alberta’s tax dollars flow to Ottawa and return as federal health transfers — only a portion of what Albertans contribute. In other words, some of your tax dollars help fund healthcare programs in other provinces before a portion comes back to Alberta. Under a different fiscal arrangement, those dollars could stay here and be invested directly into our own system. What could that mean in practice? Modelling suggests it could help fund expanded pharmacare and dental coverage for over a million Albertans, reduce surgical wait times, and make Alberta competitive enough on taxes and quality of life to attract top-tier medical professionals from around the world. Healthcare is personal. Understanding how fiscal arrangements affect the system that serves you is an important part of the conversation.

It's one of the most common questions about Alberta sovereignty, and the answer is already settled in Canadian law. In 1998, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in the Reference re Secession of Quebec that any province has the legal right to pursue independence, provided there is a clear majority vote on a clear question. Two years later, Parliament passed the Clarity Act, which confirmed the same principle: if a clear majority of voters in a province vote to leave on a clear question, the federal government is legally obligated to negotiate. No new laws are needed. No constitutional amendments are required. The legal pathway already exists. Understanding the legal framework is essential to understanding the full picture.

When decisions get made in Ottawa, Alberta's voice is among the quietest in the room.  That’s by design Alberta holds just 6 of 105 Senate seats. That is 5.7% of the upper chamber. Meanwhile, Ontario and Quebec together control 58.8% of Senate representation and consistently vote as a bloc on issues that directly affect Alberta's energy sector, taxation, and resource management. The result is a structural imbalance that has real consequences. Federal legislation like Bill C-69, the carbon tax, and pipeline restrictions were passed with minimal meaningful input from Alberta's representatives. Yet Albertans bear a disproportionate share of the economic cost. This isn't about partisan politics; it's simple math. The math always maths and the math doesn’t lie. Under the current system, Alberta's interests will always be outvoted by central Canada.
