"Child safety" has always been one of the four horsemen of the erosion of civil liberties, but this is getting ridiculous. We now have a government-run pedophile ring so expansive that prosecuting the people involved would potentially collapse our entire government, and at the same time, we have California passing a law requiring your operating system (Android, Linux, Windows, whatever) to verify your age and provide that information to apps installed on your own devices. The irony here is that the developer of the world's second most popular operating system (Bill Gates) is implicated in all this too as a customer of Epstein's. As are execs at other major tech companies. Their rationale for this bill is of course "to protect children". This is absolute tyrannical bullshit that will do nothing to increase the safety of children but grinds the gears forward to the total elimination of free, private speech. If anything, laws like this will make it easier for children to be targeted for abuse. You shouldn't need to provide an ID to use your own computer or access the internet. The internet is the single greatest tool for human speech, communication, and democracy since the advent of the printing press, and we cannot let them rip it away from us or gate it behind ID checks. Gavin Newsom, who is considered a presidential frontrunner for dems in the next presidential election, signed this into law. There is zero chance I am voting for him after passing this bill.

Here's your interesting bias for the week: Ascertainment bias. You will hear from people working in roles where they frequently interact with the public like cashiers or customer support reps that "people are idiots". One variant I hear a lot is "people can't read". It's easy to see why one might come to this conclusion, especially given concerning trends in American literacy, but they're actually wrong and here's why. Imagine you are a customer support rep being asked the most basic-ass question you can imagine from your customer. You know this question was covered in BIG BOLD LETTERS at the top of the email you JUST SAW THEM READ. How could they miss it? And how could customers so consistently miss this? Because it's not the first time a customer has asked you this question. Let's do a thought experiment to explore. Imagine that your customers are EXCELLENT readers. Let's assume that 99% of the time, they will have a perfect recollection of what they read and that every time, without fail, they read the e-mails you send them. Even in this unrealistic scenario, 1% of readers will still need you to repeat something they read. 1 in every hundred of these nearly perfect readers will ask you a dumbass question. If you are interacting with hundreds of customers a week, you will inevitably encounter a few of these customers and you will reasonably come to the conclusion that "people can't read". On some days, even if you only interact with 100 customers, you will get multiple customers with this problem because streaks are inevitable in random draws. The larger your sample size, the greater the chance that you will encounter a rare event (the 1% of customers who can't recall what they read). Because this is rare and notable, you are more likely to remember it vs the 99 customers who passed through without incident, which causes you to perceive it as more common than it is.

I will die on the hill that Bitcoin continues to miss a MAJOR opportunity with having lower programmability. Having sovereign money is cool, having sovereign money you can program is even cooler. Eth was only allowed to grow and flourish because Bitcoin didn't have these features. We now have BitVM and other solutions but I don't see anybody building on them, and I'm not sure why. And now BIP110 crowd seems adamant about closing the hay doir. It's a shame, there is no reason Bitcoin shouldn't be the L1 for everything. Money isn't just money. Money is also loans, money is also group decision-making about how to spend money. That requires programmability. Eth is centralizing garbage, we obviously can't store full smart contracts on chain, but they should be pinnable to base chain and should be able to use BTC natively. After spending a half dozen hours researching BIP-110, I still don't have any strong opinions. What I mainly learned is that many people in the Bitcoin space who I previously looked up to will turn into children the second someone disagrees with them, which is really unfortunate. We can do better. There's good discussions to be had here on technical and philosophical merit, but 90% of what I see is character assassination, name calling, and strawmans.

Every AI you use has liberal bias. It's not right or wrong, it just is. But why is it this way? - The world has a liberal bias. There are way more people on team blue than team red, because urban areas tend to be liberal and most people live in urban areas. This means the bulk of written material in existence online will have a liberal bend to it. AI is not intelligent yet, it just gives you the most likely result. If 90% of your sources are liberal, 90% of your output will be too. - LLMs were largely trained on data from reddit, which has taken a strong turn to the left over the past few years. Social media platforms in general are mostly owned by liberal leaning people and companies with some notable opposite exceptions (x and truth social). Just something to be aware of. How to correct for this bias? - ask for it to provide alternative viewpoints - seek out different LLMs with different bias setpoints. Just like media consumption, look at stories from different news sources and you'll find the truth is often somewhere in the middle. - run your own LLMs and train them on your own datasets.
