Sardinic Smile: A term derived from the deadly plant, Hemlock Water Dropwort. In ancient Sardinia, they would incapacitate the elderly people in society as they became a burden on the community. The plant would be ingested by said elderly person, and once the muscles seized up preventing them from resisting, ( and giving them an eerie grin ) they would be thrown from a hight to kill them. We may be asking ourselves why family or ‘people’ didn't protest and prevent the grisly ending, but perhaps it was justified with words like ‘burden’ and perhaps it was seen as a ‘virtuous’ way to go. Perhaps the elderly felt like they were freeing their community from burden? Either way, it makes me ponder the weird mental gymnastics we perform as people to justify intentional killing of another human, while simultaneously being outraged when another is killed unintentionally. Fast forward a a bit, and here we are, with ‘abortion’ and 'assisted dying’ being excused readily, and getting outraged when prompted by the algos.
