How much energy will AI really consume? The good, the bad and the unknown https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-00616-z "From a global perspective, AI’s impact on future electricity demand is actually projected to be relatively small. "In 2025, we find that the student use of AI has surged in the last year, with almost all students (92%) now using AI in some form, up from 66% in 2024, and some 88% having used GenAI for assessments, up from 53% in 2024. The main uses of GenAI are explaining concepts, summarising articles and suggesting research ideas, but a significant number of students – 18% – have included AI-generated text directly in their work." #AI #UK #Universities

A Nobel laureate on the economics of artificial intelligence Daron Acemoglu has long studied technology-driven growth. He thinks we should slow down and make sure we’re using AI the right way. "It’s going to impact a bunch of office jobs that are about data summary, visual matching, pattern recognition, etc. And those are essentially about 5% of the economy." #AI #Economics

Crackdown on Power-Guzzling Data Centers May Soon Come Online in California "California residents now pay the highest price for electricity in the continental U.S., state analysts reported last month. Costs have been driven in part by levies to prevent and insure against wildfires, but the analysts anticipate a less conspicuous source of pressure on power bills going forward: growing electricity demand from data centers." #Datacenters #Electricity
