The Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading feels almost dreamlike—a place where you naturally lower your voice and slow your pace, as if the room itself carries a wisdom far older than its visitors. It was established in 1837 by Portuguese immigrants determined to preserve their literary heritage in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Today, it holds the largest collection of Portuguese-language literature outside Portugal, with more than 350,000 works, including rare volumes dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The current building, completed in the late 19th century, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world—a reputation reinforced when Time magazine ranked it fourth globally. Yet its appeal goes far beyond its ornate architecture. The institution remains an active cultural center, hosting events, safeguarding manuscripts, and receiving a legal-deposit copy of every book published in Portugal. [📹 meredithonthemap]

A 2,000-year-old Roman water channel is still flowing today. This remarkable underground aqueduct lies beneath the Smyrna Agora in Izmir, Türkiye. Built in antiquity, it once carried fresh spring water to the city’s baths and fountains. The stone arches remain exceptionally well preserved, and the main channel is large enough for a person to walk through. Even after two millennia, water continues to run through the system and is now used to help irrigate the modern archaeological site.

The shifting patterns of light on the seafloor are known as caustics. They form when sunlight is refracted and reflected by the constantly moving surface of the water, which acts like a dynamic magnifying glass that focuses and redirects the light into bright, dancing shapes. [📹 danhlegend]

The F-35B can hover like a helicopter and transition to forward flight like a jet, enabled by its advanced lift system developed by Lockheed Martin. The design allows short takeoffs and vertical landings while maintaining the speed and performance of a conventional fighter. [🎞️ intelligencego]

China has unveiled a new maglev train capable of reaching speeds of 600 km/h (373 mph), making it the fastest train in the world. The system could cut travel time between Beijing and Shanghai to around 2.5 hours. Using magnetic levitation technology, the train is designed to be ultra-quiet, highly efficient, and produces zero direct emissions.

A Chinese team took an AI assistant with 430,000 lines of code that needed a $599 Mac Mini and 1GB of RAM… and rewrote the entire thing in Go so it could run on a $9.90 board with under 10MB of memory. Boot time: from 500 seconds to 1 second. Cost: from $599 to $9.90. Memory: from 1GB to 10MB. And the wildest part: 95% of the new code was written by AI agents. Humans only guided the architecture. 7,400+ stars on GitHub in just 4 days. This is the future: every AI technology that starts out expensive gets commoditized within months. The moat isn’t access to the technology — it’s what you DO with it.

This guy jumps onto a moving horse, balances as it gallops, and then starts jump roping while standing on it. Not exaggerating.
