Early potatoes 🥔 coming out. So exciting to to see these babies! That’s horseradish so big in the background. Tried neem oil for the harlequin beetles on them, though ended picking up insecticidal soap today. Hopefully that works better. #homesteading #garden #potatoes #grownostr image

Greetings #nostr. Spent yesterday out starting a pear tree guild for two trees. Cardboard down. Compost and soil down. Clover seeds down. A little already sprouted buckwheat there too. Today was all transplanting brassicas (cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, collards, and cabbage) and some protective companions; lavender, sage, and oregano. Break time! #homesteading #garden #permies #permaculture image

GN all. It’s been a rainy day, though a respite this evening. Taking the greenhouse overwintering Comfrey out to the porch tonight, before dividing it up outside among the fruit trees. Working towards permaculture guilds. Baby steps. #garden #permaculture #homesteading #grownostr image

Found horseradish leaves covered with these beetles today, nibbling away. Have them a good dose of neem oil spray to make them go away. #garden #homesteading #grownostr image

#Garden day - almost 5 hrs, and got the plants 🌱 and seeds in two of the new raised beds. 2 kinds of onion sets, 2 types of parsnips, 5 kinds of turnips, 5 kinds of carrots 🥕, and 4 kinds of beets. All watered in 😁 after preparing soil last weekend. Looking forward to seeing them grow and then the harvest! Hope everyone is having a great weekend wherever you are. Off to fix some dinner, and it’s sourdough weekend, so, it’s stretch and fold for a bit afterwards. #homesteading #grownostr image

GM #nostr #coffeechain ☕️Getting started on planting root crops; putting in beets, carrots, parsnips, turnips, potatoes and some ground nuts (not peanuts). Excited to experience this one. Wishing you the very best for your day! Ground nuts are new to me, though long history. Per sowtrueseed.com, “Apios americana, also known colloquially as "Indian Groundnut," and by its indigenous name, "Hopniss," is found in indigenous diets from Canada to the Gulf coast. This perennial from the pea family produces both edible tubers and beans (seeds are edible but pods are fibrous!). Groundnuts can be planted with potatoes in the spring time. The vines can extend up to ten feet, with purple-pink flowers resembling wisteria from July to September. Fleshy tubers varying in size from one to eight centimeters in diameter can be steamed, roasted, boiled, mashed, or can be dried then ground into a thickening powder for recipes. A bit sweeter than potatoes, but with lasting heartiness, possibly related to the high protein content (3x more than a standard potato).”
