‘Dark Indonesia’ protests erupt nationwide with students taking to streets JAKARTA - Public dissatisfaction with the current situation in Indonesia has manifested itself in several movements protesting against the policies of President Prabowo Subianto and his predecessor. One such movement was a nationwide protest called Indonesia Gelap (Dark Indonesia), which took place on Feb 17. Thousands of students took to the streets across various cities coordinated by the All-Indonesia Association of University Student Executive Bodies (BEM SI). The demonstration is expected to last for three days, with simultaneous rallies in multiple regions. In Jakarta, the rally was concentrated at the Arjuna Wiwaha statue on the intersection of Jl Medan Merdeka Barat and Jl MH Thamrin, adjacent to the National Monument (Monas) square. The protest is also trending on social media with images of the national coat-of-arms, the Garuda, depicted against a black background emblazoned with the hashtag #IndonesiaGelap, known as the Black Garuda. The protesters claim that Indonesia is not progressing towards its Indonesia Emas (Golden Indonesia) vision but is instead heading into darkness. In 2024, various memes appeared, joking that instead of Indonesia Emas, the slogan should be Indonesia Cemas (Anxious Indonesia), or even Indonesia Lemas (Weakened Indonesia). #IndonesiaGelap: A call to international journalist. Today (17/02), many Indonesian gathered to criticize the new government's ongoing policies and to protest against austerity measures. — a Thread The planned austerity measures implemented by Indonesia's Ministry of Finance threaten to cut scholarship programs, pay for lecturers, and threatened many other initiatives, potentially leading to a lower quality of life for all Indonesians. [2] The protests have taken place in multiple cities, including Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, and Wamena. Unfortunately, many of our citizens in Surabaya and Wamena clashed with local law enforcement, as reports indicate that tear gas were shot in Surabaya[3] Additionally live ammunition were allegedly used to suppress protesters in Wamena.[4]. Worse, the lack of media coverage threatens to bury the issue that many Indonesians faces today and will continue to face in the future. Many government employees now face uncertainty regarding their employment, as the austerity measures could impact their roles. Meanwhile, students are worried that they or their friends would be forced to drop out as the austerity measure threatens their scholarships or tuition subsidies. This is our call to all international journalists and media figures, as Indonesia’s mainstream media has largely ignored the unrest and unease. You can help us highlight this tweet on your respective social media and web channels. With your help, we can pressure our government and hold them accountable. This is a government that has historically reacted to or canceled policies whenever things went viral. Because in Indonesia, #NoViralNoJustice so please help us bring justice. Spread the word around.

Did you know? The Head of the Expert Team & Initiator of Danantara is Burhanuddin Abdullah. He was once sentenced to 5 years in prison with a subsidiary of six months and a fine of Rp 250 million by the panel of judges at the Corruption Court for passing the amendment to the BI Law and the political settlement of BLBI. Burhanuddin is suspected of knowing about the misuse of BI funds of Rp 100 billion which were channeled to several parties, namely former BI officials amounting to Rp 68.5 billion and several members of the DPR amounting to Rp 31.5 billion. The Supreme Court (MA) through an August 2009 cassation decision reduced the sentence of former BI Governor Burhanuddin Abdullah to three years in prison, after on appeal he was sentenced to 5 years and 6 months in prison in a corruption case. #danatara #IndonesiaGelap https://x.com/coldthem/status/1891503579678015981

Danantara is a new project to manage money from state-owned enterprises (SOEs). In the past, money from SOEs was used directly for state spending. Now, the money is not used directly, but invested. For example, if in 2025 SOEs get Rp300 trillion, Rp200 trillion of that will be invested by Danantara to make more money, maybe up to Rp1000 trillion. If it is profitable, the money can be returned to the country or invested again. The investment can be in stocks, property, or other large projects. This is different from Temasek in Singapore, because Danantara uses money from SOE dividends, while Temasek does not. However, if this project fails, it could cause big problems for the Indonesian economy. #Indonesiagelap #indonesia #danatara
