I’ve been wanting to share some exciting (to me) plant news! There is a wildflower that I’ve always called “lemon pepper weed” because it smells just like lemon pepper seasoning when you rub it. Delicious smell. I seem to always find it dried up and I figured it was some kind of Everlasting because of its appearance when dry, and a little due to it having an intense smell (the other Everlasting I’m directly familiar with is Helichrysum italicum). I could never quite figure out what it really was, though. Well, at the Homesteaders of America conference, a medicinal foraging vendor had a huge bundle of lemon pepper weed, so I took the opportunity to find out what it REALLY is. Weirdly, it’s described as having a maple syrup smell, which would be a little closer to curry plant than to what I smell. I don’t smell maple syrup at all, just lemon pepper seasoning all the way. Maybe it’s different when not dry. I am just so happy to finally know what this plant is and thought I’d share it with y’all. #botany #foraging #grownostr

Does anyone on here keep dairy sheep or eat/drink a lot of sheep dairy? I’m particularly interested in knowing what it’s like to cook with sheep butter or cream. Does it taste “sheepy” when heated like goat milk tastes “goaty” when heated? Butter is my main cooking fat and I also cook with cream close to daily. When we homestead, I’d rather not have to go to the store for something that’s so essential every day, especially when ruminants are so good for land health. But dairy cows, even miniature ones, produce SO much milk that I’m afraid it would be a lot of extra work just to avoid wasting it. After hearing a talk at the Homesteaders Of America conference, it sounds like dairy sheep make a more manageable amount, and their milk is also higher in the fats I want dairy for anyway.
