It is extremely concerning to see the degree of damage to the intellect caused by decades of mass media indoctrination—which includes the education system: - the youtuber Benn Jordan posting a video criticizing the current state of affairs in America, the thumbnail text reads “I kinda miss capitalism”. The video premise? It’s that the country is transitioning away from traditional growth-based capitalism… - a nostrich posting a meme claiming Elon Musk is a “crony socialist”… - another nostrich posting a meme about Canada’s economy and claiming it’s the socialist Trudeau’s fault… The misconceptions are not the problem, neither is the biased perception or the lack of understanding of concepts. The problem seems to be entrenched beliefs and the disregard for analytical thinking that can enable us to overcome such beliefs. Having a Cold War mentality about capitalism/socialism, knowing the Hollywood depiction of communism, or the cnn/fox news framing of socialist policies is not real knowledge. Talking about socialism when all you can think of is names of “communist” countries or Wikipedia definitions is not real discourse, the same goes for claiming to understand capitalism by quoting capitalist thinkers, and parading knowledge about Carl Menger or Milton Friedman as absolute realities.
