I’m back home, which means I’m reunited with my piano 🎹✨
This is one of my favourite ways to improvise and practise: play some piano, then add violin or viola. When I do this, I get to explore HARMONY in a way that feels almost like playing music with another person. Tones against tones, colours against colours, the endless possibilities for expression.
Harmony is one of my greatest joys in music… the infinite combinations of sounds that suggest infinite new musical possibilities 💜

A little throwback today — ⭐️Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star ✨
I recorded this while busking last week….
This version of the song has the main tune followed by an “obligato” variation — the cool part is that the two parts can be played together like a duet 🎻🎶 I used to play it this way with my mom when I was a kid, but I’ve hardly played it since then! It’s funny the music that comes out when I’m just playing for a couple hours in a row.

🎻 Thanks to everyone who’s been following along with my daily tunes here on Nostr! Yesterday’s zap-game post was a little quieter than last week, and that’s totally fine, I’m just getting this tradition off the ground.

So here’s my improv inspired by the sun! I tried to capture the sun’s power, beauty, and brightness. It’s a beautiful day here so of course the actual sun makes an appearance! 🌞🕶️

It’s been a week since I joined Nostr! And what a week! I’ve posted music every day and the response has been incredible! Thanks for all the follows, likes, reposts, and zaps! Thanks also for the conversations, ideas, and inspiration. Nostr is such a great place to be a musician, and I feel like I’m just getting started! 💜
I wanted to do a proper introduction. So, my name is Matthias McIntire, I’m a composer, improviser, violinist, violist, sometimes pianist, music educator, and more. As both a composer and performer, I have a really eclectic background — in classical music, contemporary weird music, jazz, fiddle, free improv, field recording, electronic and ambient music. I compose music for acoustic instruments and ensembles, with and without electronics, such as orchestra, string quartet, percussion, piano, woodwinds, harp and more.
My music is inspired by personal expression, emotion, collaboration, nature, birds and animals, making field recordings, colourful things, stars, the many musical genres I love, feelings of mystery in the world, travel, and technology.
With all that… what content would you like to see from me? So far I have shared improvisations, fiddle tunes, and turning your ideas into little pieces/improvs.
I plan to continue all of this and, honestly, I could keep doing just that forever! But I’ve had some other sorts of ideas, e.g. incorporate piano, show BTS of my creative process, “compose with me”, showing the weird instruments I’ve collected, demo or how to videos… and…?
I also plan to release recordings on Nostr. I’m exploring zaps for digital downloads, @wavlake, @tunestr, and RSS feeds. It will take me a bit to get things up and running — but keep an eye out for that!
Lastly, here is an improv after @Andrey Arapov’s suggestion.. to do something inspired by Peter Broderick’s “Violin Solo No. 1”.

Sixth note, I’m celebrating changing from the word “post” to “note”. See my previous notes for the erroneous “post” lingo 😅Anyway, as a musician I like the word note better (🎶) — I plan to share many more notes on Nostr, both musical and otherwise!
Here’s a short set of two Irish fiddle tunes for your listening pleasure! The lyrical Arran Boat Song followed by the off kilter slip jig Kid on the Mountain.
Also, I’m curious to try something new: drop a zap ⚡️ and comment a theme/word for my next video. Tomorrow I’ll improvise a tune inspired by the theme of the highest zapper!! What do you think??

Fifth post, and can I just say… sharing music on Nostr actually FEELS GOOD. As an independent artist I’ve tried “sharing value” on corporate social, but it’s always felt like a slog. Post for months, but the platform gives nothing back. Always waiting for an algorithm I don’t understand, that I have no control over, to gatekeep my content only to get low views, low engagement, and no value coming back to me.
Maybe right now YouTube, Meta, and co have more “potential reach”, if you can bear the slog, but I can tell you that sharing on Nostr immediately feels WAY BETTER, so I’m sure this will all change. On Nostr I’ve felt the love, felt valued right away, and I’ve been paid for my effort directly by individuals in digital sound money… my mind is seriously blown!! And I feel energized to keep contributing.
For independent musicians, nostr is a game changer.
Anyway, introducing my large tenor viola, thanks to
@Grace and Truth for the request! Here I am playing the first part of a piece I wrote called “Little Monster”… I think the seaweed really adds something!
