GD mates. I'll try to fill that time between you GM and GN posts with this lovely picture I snapped today. image Or is it AI generated? Can you even tell?

LOL at people suggesting AI is going to leave people behind if they can't afford to pay for the tools. If that's true, then open source (including the training data) is vital to innovation. There'd be only megacorporatons making software, no open source because no AI gatekeeper is going to allow someone to create a free and open source alternative to what they make. It'd undermine their income stream. And if you think AI can't make AI tools, then you are acknowledging a huge limitation of so-called AI. They can't make anything new. It can only remix and combine things it's seen before. So if you create anything novel, you needn't worry about being left behind.

Yoy can shit at home and do like absolutely nothing and your name goes through like 17 computers a day. 1984? You're right, man! That's a typo. Orwell is here and now and he's livin' large We have no names, man. No names. We are nameless!

Steak & Shake is a nice treat and way to test out my self-hosted lightning node all at once. And I'm racking up inbound liquidity like other people rack up the credit card reward points. Also, I don't have any channels directly to any large providers. Just individuals that I found through #nostr I realize there may be a huge nide clearing my transactions, and I'm cool with that, but I'm also cool with the possibility that it could potentially be plebs only someday.

Well, Plebeian market is dead. Can't say the word "password" on there, no replies to my bug request, no comments on my merge request, no notifications when someone makes a purchase, other than some JSON that goes to the store npub instead of my personal one. Too bad too. It LOOKS nice, but not being functional ia a dealbreaker for me.

Is bitchat like Briar, where you can have encrypted chat over bluetooth or wifi with no internet?

Framed out the roof of the new shed today. 12' x 10' It was 32°C (39°C with the heat index). Did it it three small chunks. No injuries.

Was SETI @ Home a waste of energy? What did it accomplish? Is the internet worth the environmental cost? "according to Ethic (2024), if the Internet were a country, it would be the sixth most polluting country in the world in terms of emissions." Source: https://mayfirst.coop/files/justicia-ambiental-infra.en.pdf If these things were not a waste of energy, what is the basis fort claiming AI is environmentally wasteful? I have very concrete answers to this, but I want to inspire people to think critically and come up with a consistent way of thinking about what is "wasted" or "worth it".

This is how conouters work, or more specifically, hardware interrupt requests (IRQs) image

I gotta say, having a heat index of 43°C really does slow me down when working outside. Many breaks to come in to cool off and stay hydrated. Be careful out there, fam. Heat exhaustion/stoke is no joke. And one you get it once, you're much more likely to get it again.

I made some supposedly low carb bread and it actually tastes pretty darned good! I had to make a concious effort to stop eating it after 4 slices. Time will tell how low carb it really is. I can measure these things, albeit inderectly.

This is the 16mm projector from 1969 that we fixed tonight at the new Repair Cafe. image We also probably fixed a lawn edger (didn't have a battery to try it out), failed to fix a 19" home stereo cassette player (was not going to be able to be diagnosed in a reasonable amount of time), were not able to fix a screwdriver (not designed to be repairable), and didn't get to the 3.5mm headphone jack that someone wanted to put onto... something. Amazing response from the community and everyone had a really positive attitude, even if their object couldn't be repaired. Seriously, without people bringing in things in need of repair, this would just be a huge waste of time. In case any of you are on #nostr, thank you for making this a success.

Who else is running community events to help the masses put Linux on their desktops before Windows 10 abandons them? Do you have any tips to share? I'm going to be involved in one of these in my town and want to learn from those who came before me. I love helping people save money, getting them to switch to open source software, and make the most of what they already have. This is like a perfect storm for me. 😄
