Trail running + native plants
What bird is singing in this clip? Thinking it's a thrush, and given my location, wood thrush seems most likely, but possibly hermit or migrating Swainson's?? Whoever it is, he brought some extra joy to my morning run! #birding #birdID #grownostr
Reposting from earlier bc I think this is important... When I found the Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism (FAIR) it was a breath of fresh air. They are "a non-partisan organization dedicated to advancing civil rights and liberties for all Americans, and promoting a common culture based on fairness, understanding, and humanity." Their "pro-human movement" is, I believe, exactly what we need. Their latest guest substack expresses how "America is exporting its worst ideas" (some of the ones driving our culture wars) to our cross-Atlantic allies: American problems are becoming global problems. It's a short but thought-provoking read, closing with the following: "Weโ€™ve arrived at a critical moment in which we have a choice to make: continue down the path of extremism and watch the American experiment become consigned to the dustbin of history, or do the hard work of uniting the American people, and by default, our international allies, around principles of freedom, democracy, and decency." Can nostr be part of this urgent depolarization movement? I hope so. Let's do this. Fairforall.substack.com Fairforall.org #freedom #worthreading #orgstofollow #grownostr #tolerance

๐ŸŽต "I could be happy, the rest of my life, with my cinnamon fern..." ๐ŸŽถ ๐Ÿ˜ It has grown so much in the last few days! Excited for when it gets its truly cinnamon-stick-resembling reproductive fronds. These are native in the U.S. east of the Mississippi plus in Oklahoma and Texas. I love watching things grow in spring! What's growing in your garden? #grownostr #plantstr #gardenostr image
I ran a trail 25k today and got these adorable "medals" (one for finishing, one for an age group award) made by local Girl Scouts. It was so much fun! Twisty course with just enough rolling hills to give you constant momentum, and random sleet squalls off and on to keep things interesting on an otherwise cool and cloudy day. Thankful for my body that it can do these things and the amazing trail running community. ๐Ÿ’œ #grownostr #runstr image
A host of house sparrows! ๐Ÿ˜ Hopefully they make you smile. #grownostr #birdstr (eh? should birdstr be a thing?) image
These tiarellas (foamflower) are in my native perennial bed. They're so cute! A nice shade/woodland plant. You can also get them in crosses with heuchera (coral bells/alumroot), called heucherella. There are so many heuchera varieties to choose from, from lime green to deep purple and blooms from white to bright red. For purists, the original native strains are also lovely. Does anyone know if heuchera or tiarella have any culinary/medicinal uses? Of course, this was before the tiarellas were munched off by deer. :-( Any tips for keeping those giant pests out of my garden?? (Besides shooting and eating them...where I live that's unfortunately not an option.) #grownostr #gardenstr (I feel like this should be a thing?) image
Spotted this recipe on my aunt's fridge last Thanksgiving. Easy and so delicious! I reduced the sugar to 1/2 c and added 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Seems ripe for adaptation! Maybe golden raisins or currants? 1 c chopped dried apricots 2 c all purpose flour 3/4 c sugar 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1 egg 1 cup plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup melted butter 2 tbl milk or oil Heat oven to 350 F. Line or grease muffin pan Bring 2 c of water to a boil. Turn off heat and soak apricots. In a large bowl, mix dry ingredients. In a medium bowl, mix wet ingredients. Add wet to dry and mix until just combined. Drain apricots and fold in. Batter will be *thick.* Fill muffin cups about 3/4 full. Makes 12 muffins. Bake 20-24 min until tops are golden brown and toothpick in center comes out clean. Enjoy!! I can also imagine these being amazing with a cream cheese-based icing (like for carrot cake, my personal favorite)... #grownostr #bakestr (can we make this a thing??) image
Does anyone love baby ferns (i.e. fiddleheads) as much as I do? They're everywhere in the woods near me now. These are Christmas ferns, named because they stay green up to Christmas, and often much longer depending on the winter. #grownostr image
Where my trail runners at? Captured this over the weekend. Morning light is the best! #grownostr image
Hi everybody! New here. Any trail runners, gardeners, or birders on board? Also really interested in regenerative ag. #plebchain
